JamesD (192), Centreville, Virginia, USA Nov 20, 2007 I think this is a very good example of a malty, European-style barleywine. The aroma is yeasty, fruity, very malty, with a slight hint of raisins and some bread pudding. The flavor is smooth, very silky maltiness with notes of dry, earthy fruit and nuts, some caramel and brown sugar are also detectable, but in balance. I can’t wait to drink the other three! Seek this beer out if you’re a fan of English barleywines. Skeegle (476), Maryland, USA Nov 19, 2007 Better than its rating suggests. This beer has a hoppy and sweet flavor, more hoppy than most BWs and not as sweet as most. Slightly high alcoholic taste. Mine was 10.3%. larsniclas (3383), Gothenburg, Sweden Nov 18, 2007 Bottled.
Muddy, dark amber. Small, beige head.
Very sweet and malty aroma. Sweet fruits, nuts and hops.
Thick and oily palate.
Loads of sweet fruits; apricots, raisins, figs. Warm, alco-feel. rlgk (3377), Vårgårda, Sweden Nov 14, 2007 Bottle. Amber color with yeast, offwhite head. Malty, nutty vinous aroma, some american style hops, vanilla and sweet fruits. Malty, vinous flavor, sweet fruits, raisins, some alcohol, milky and with a nice full body. Ansset13 (127), Wilmington, North Carolina, USA Nov 10, 2007 Pours a slightly murky deep reddish brown, with close to no head. The nose is mild with hints of caramel, and a dash of hops, and dark fruit. The flavor follows in suit, and masks the alcohol well. Overall a good brew, but fairly different for this style. beerbill (1918), Laurel, New York, USA Nov 9, 2007 12 oz. bottle courtesy of a trade with dirty martini. Pours a mostly clear dark reddish brown with a moderate off-white head that faded to a film after a few sips and left decent lacing through mid-glass. Pleasant aroma of caramel and a bit of brown sugar. The flavor is mostly caramel again with a bit of brown sugar. Some alcohol warmth at the swallow, but it does not interfere with the beer. Lacks the silkiness and body though that I think of with some of the better barley wines. tomthompson89 (1459), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 6, 2007 this barley wine is cool looking, almost no head, super dark almost maple syrup color, some hops on the nose but not too much sweet caremel , flavor is good malts with dried fruit and a touch of hops to balance it all out. Really nice one really enjoyed it. Bought in Halifax BenDover (125), Texas, USA Nov 4, 2007 I was surprised this was as good as it was, because most of Flying Dog’s beers are pretty average. (The packaging is cool though.) This one was very malty and sweet without being cloyingly so. Unusual for a barleywine. Strong alcohol but not unpleasantly so. Good stuff.
