Hazy, dark red brown body with a medium-lasting creamy off-white head and lots of stagnant floaties. Burnt grain malt flavour with sweet toasted yeast, hints of coffee, and a bit of medium boozy wood notes. Medium-full body. Interesting, nice balance. Pailhead (2597), Allen Park, Michigan, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 15, 2005 Bottle: Aroma is caramel and citrus hops. Pours a mostly transparent dark brown with a small off-white head. Lots of caramel up front. Finishes with lots of raisin, hops, and light chocolate. Don’t really like all the raisin in the finish. It’s not horrible, but not great either. ChainGangGuy (2590), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 16, 2008 Appearance: Pours an opaque, dark reddish-brown body with a scattered, off-white head.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, malty aroma with notes of toffee, roasted grains, ripe plums, and with a full, everpresent, evergreen pine scent.
Taste: Sweet maltiness tasting of toffee candy. Plum fruitiness. Slight roasty coffee and woody hints. Piney, resinous hop character and moderate bitterness which hits right about the time the warming alcohol does. Finishes that’s all at once bitter, sweet, warming, and that roasty touch that won’t go away.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Well, I will say it’s one of the better beers in the Flying Dog line-up. 1FastSTi (2569), Glendale, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Sep 3, 2005 Pours to a reverse cascading head that is huge creamy and rocky and beige. The body is a deep brown with shiny red highlights. Excellent lacing. The aroma is chocolate, anise, brown sugar, oak. The flavor is sweet, oak, cooked turbinado sugars, and chocolate. The palate is a little sticky and feels watery perhaps due to filtering. :( Would be better if it wasn’t. Bockyhorsey (2549), Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 4, 2005 Barley field aroma, also had that smell of drinking a red wine also. Brown body had decent head and good lacing left on glass. Had a rich chocolate flavor. Just looked at alcohol content, it is hidden in this beer. Would of thought with out looking this tasted like a 6% alcohol beer. Rich malty presence on the palate. A good beer. pivo (2537), Germany
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 9, 2004 Very full fruity nose (raisins, figs). Dark brown with a hazy reddish tinge. Low head - almost non-existent. Slick sweet malt front with molasses tones and toffee, with a spicy finish. Woody character at times but with a clean palate. Alcohol stings the thought slightly. Nice mix of flavors and good transitions. dwyerpg (2537), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 14, 2005 Dark brown in color. I must say that I didn’t know that barley wines were really malty. I used to not like malty beers; know I only not like light malty beers. As far as barleywines go, this is the worst I’ve had so far. That said, my high score should indicate that I both like this style and think this to be the best Flying Dog brew. jgb9348 (2510), Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 13/20 | Jun 28, 2003 Dark in colour, especially for a barley wine. The beer poured with a bit of head as well, which is odd for a usual still style. Very sweet smell with tons of sugar and sweet fruit (figs speak out loudly) and also some malty hints. A thick mouthful that is definately malt loaded. Some chocolate tones are picked up on the taste, which I find a bit strange for this style. The aftertaste was a bit 'ordinary' with not too much complexity. A decent beer, but not too good for the style. Worth trying, but if you havent had any of the more accessible barley wines, definately try those (anchor, sierra nevada, dogfishhead, etc).
