Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Dark brown color with a sweet nose that wasn’t over the top considering the style. Strong malt body with a zesty character that I couldn’t identify.

Bottle. Aroma of powerful hops and caramel in a Stone-like mix, with berry, toffee, grapefruit, and a whiff of alcohol. Plum and molasses. Essentially opaque brown pour with a light brown head. Bitingly hoppy taste, very sweet and boozy with light fumes, not quite cloying. Big caramel and toffee really set in and entrench themselves around the teeth. Big grape and plum with molasses. Woody, oaky notes, and an actual semblance of balance between the heavy, syrupy crystal malt and the hops. Full body and a kick in the teeth. Tongue-numbing. Dry, nearly-nutty aftertaste. Better than expected - not fit for the top shelf, but still a pretty good dessert BW.

Huge malt aroma with licorice and...this sounds weired, but it kind of has the olfactory equivelant of the texture of liver. I know it sounds odd, but it leaves me that impression. Deep garnet color with no head at all. Sweet malt and strong black licorice flavors...a hint of sasparilla and a rounded smooth finish. Pleasant to sip at.

2005 vintage, I think (hand-labeled February 2005 by my trader). Murky sediment-laden reddish-brown body, minimal off-white head. Bready, caramely aroma with some oxidation. The vintage typing on the bottom of the label says "2003" so this may be older than I thought. Toasty, caramely body with residual citrusy, piney hops that were obviously once potent, now dulled but still imparting a vague sharpness to the beer. Messy and rather harsh. I’m not digging it.

(bottle - 12 oz: 2005 vintage) Deep murky brown pour with not much of a head. Light and subtle aroma of chocolate, malts, plums and some alcohol. Flavor is very malty and sweet at the beginning with a malty middle and a slightly bitter and malty finish with a lot of alcohol warming at the end. Taste disappears very quickly, even before the warming effect has passed. Not a bad barley wine, but one of the less flavorful ones I’ve had.

Bottled. Dark and deep brown in colour with a medium sized brown head. Toasted and malty with notes of molasses, chocolate, caramel, pines, and hops. Very nice.
