Not the most fav style for me, bit I am coming around to it, and who can argue with the ABV! Poured a deep murky looking brown. was sweet and malty and POW! the alcohol came right out. Not bad, possibly the best from the flying dog co. JohnnyJ (1352), Carlsbad, California, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 7, 2009 A below average barleywine. Dark orange pour, thin head. Caramel, sweet malt, hints of chocolate, fruit, and slightly hoppy. Pretty boring. boto (1345), Granby, Connecticut, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 11, 2006 12oz bottle: This one pours a caramel brown color. It was pretty much devoid of head. The aroma is sweet, but not overly so. Mainly caramel notes, but also some alcohol coming through. Maybe some plums also. The taste is OK. Not the best barleywine I’ve had, but far from the worst. The taste is caramel malt, with some dates and plums. Also some of the alcohol comes through. A suprisingly lighter body than I would expect. fly (1333), austin, Tejas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 15, 2005 Dark and rich, powdery and heavily leaning to the malt rather than the excessively hopped varieties I tend to prefer. Nice, but would be far more pleased if a complimentary hop was added. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 16, 2005 Pours hazy and reddish brown with a thin off white head. Fruity caramel aroma with some citrus. Very fruity in flavor with some plum, peach and fig. Malt and caramel also. Large in body with a bitter finish. Unfocused in flavor but good anyway. Would be a good ale to lay down. scrizzz (1325), kirkland, Washington, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 27, 2009 Served at near room temp, strong aromas of raw alcohol, figs, wood and molasses. Dark tawny, persistent white head refused to give up. Very sweet, ruby port notes with spiked red fruit, but that’s where it ends. Finishes clean with only the warmth of alcohol. boFNjackson (1319), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 22, 2007 I absolutely love this style, I can’t see to rate them low. Bottle... poured an opaque grape color, with a thin tan head that diminished quickly. Sweet, chocolate-malt aroma. The flavors consist of that initial barley-malt bite, but great characters of creamy milk, chocolate, and a very smooth finish. The beer got better with every sip as it warms and my mouth adjusted to it’s palate. If you take fast swigs you can get the kick from the alcohol. But if you drink it slowly, and let it sit in your mouth you really get a flavor blast.
