Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

My bottle too is highly carbonated, but once it settles down it leaves a silky gem. Smooth deep malt flavor, bit of anise and liquorice. Hops are really nice in the background, but a nice counterpoint to the sweet maltiness. Definitley the best I’ve had from this brewery.

12oz - Aroma is caramel malt, raisin, plum and alcohol. Pours dark brown with small head and decent lacing. Taste is a sweeter than expected with a lot of caramel and toffee. Palate is sticky and hot with alcohol. Not bad fresh and maybe a little time for the burn to fade will be beneficial..

Sample at the tasting at From the Vine on 1.30.09. Pours light brown with a medium off-white head. Malty caramel aroma with lots of candy sweetness. Malty caramel flavor with a ton of sugar, some booze and a faint taste of hops.

The beer poured with a large head. The one I had immediately over flowed the bottle after I opened it. It had a sweet, fruity taste. Mild amount of bite (hops) on the finish. I wouldn't mind having another one, but I don't think I'd rush out to get one.

poured a deep amber color with no head, no carbonation. Moslty an alcohol ic aroma with some oak notes and sweet malts. Taste was initally sweet but not too sweet. Finished with an alcoholic bite and minmal hops.

Bottle poured dark, dark brown with a nice creamy head and thick lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, light roast and ripe fruit. Flavor is malty with a alcohol kick on the palate. Big alcohol and roasty finish.

Definitely not my favorite style. Barley wines always have too much alcohol in the nose and too much alcohol in the flavor, and this one is no exception. Some redemption in the darker hints of sweet toffee and sweet dried fruit and maybe a hint of chocolate plus enough hops to salvage something.
