Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Aroma is a sweet sugary malt smell and also allows cigar tobacco and alcohol to shine through. Pours as a dark ruby brown with small development of head but instantly dies. The drink is a strong delivery of caramel malt and heavy alcohol content almost like vodka would. An okay barley wine but nothing I’d tell a friend about or recommend to someone.

Wheaty aroma with alcohol overtones. Good strong malty flavor with an alcohol burn that is not that bad. Smooth, like a good strong liquer.

’07 Bottle tasted August ’08.

I’ve been drinking a lot of really good beers lately and I guess I felt like it was time to do penance. This one has been sitting around for a while. Pours brown with plentiful ruby highlights and a modest head leaving long-lived foamy lace around the edge of the glass. Nose of green apples and hot alcohol, rotten vegetables and a bit of old cheese. Really not impressive, but if anything the flavor is even less pleasant. Alcohol, cough syrup, very sticky-sweet, candied prunes, an assortment of the various off-flavors one might find in a barleywine. Drain pour.

Deep dark ruby hue. Big light tan head. Nose of freshly sliced apples. Im not terribly impressed here. Seems pretty dull, yet alcohol is hidden pretty well. Peppery, light fruit, yellow cherries, apples, lack of hops, light chocolate notes, anise. I wouldnt say this is great, but its F.D.'s best by far...

Deep amber in color with a very thin, almost non-existent tan head. Aroma of strong malt and maybe a little licorice with a touch of brandy. Flavor is malty with a dark fruitiness ... unlike some others, I can definitely taste the alcohol here. Silky mouthfeel ...spicy, dry finish. Very nice barleywine, but not quite as balanced as I had hoped. Still, very flavorful and pleasant.

Bottle. Poured amber with a creamy off-white head that left light lacing. Aromas of dark fruits, cherry, and apple backed with some maltiness . The flavor finds raisins, prune, cherry, and a chocolate background. Full body. Very enjoyable.

The Horn Dog Barleywine is sweet baby! The pour is a deep ruby red. The head is minimal. The aroma and flavor both are full of sweetness. The smell of cherries and sweet malt dominate the aroma. The tastes are of candy, fruits, and maybe brown sugar. The mouthfeel could be thicker, but it is a nice creamy brew. Reminds me most of Moylan’s Barley Wine."

12 oz. bottle, 2005 vintage. Hazy mahogony colour with a thin mostly diminishing frothy off-white head. Fruity and caramel malt and grapefruit and pine hop aroma. Toffee, dark fruit, lightly rummy, some bubblegum flavours with a grapefruit and light alcohol bitter finish. Full bodied, warming but smooth and quite easy drinking for 10.5% abv.
