Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Wheaty aroma with alcohol overtones. Good strong malty flavor with an alcohol burn that is not that bad. Smooth, like a good strong liquer.

12 oz bottle I believe that is the last bottle from my local trade with Drnk McDermott back in the fall. Thanks, Mark! Pours a dark brownish red murky pour, no head that forms into a small film, with some good aromas coming off. Aromas are a touch boozy, hitting up caramel and toffee with notes of vanilla, light cocoa, and subtle licorice. There is still a bit of a hoppy floral, but lacking a bit for the sweetness that is being thrown at me. Initial is malty, a little dead body wise for the style, throwing caramel, toffee, and vanilla at me straight away. A tad thin, with some coffee and chocolate brownie coming into the equation further into the body. The hops have died considerably, leaving this brew unbalanced, but preserved. Finish is malty with subtle hop bitterness lending more of a hand. Dissappointing overall, but well preserved. Hops could have played a more key role.

Deep dark ruby hue. Big light tan head. Nose of freshly sliced apples. Im not terribly impressed here. Seems pretty dull, yet alcohol is hidden pretty well. Peppery, light fruit, yellow cherries, apples, lack of hops, light chocolate notes, anise. I wouldnt say this is great, but its F.D.'s best by far...

Deep amber in color with a very thin, almost non-existent tan head. Aroma of strong malt and maybe a little licorice with a touch of brandy. Flavor is malty with a dark fruitiness ... unlike some others, I can definitely taste the alcohol here. Silky mouthfeel ...spicy, dry finish. Very nice barleywine, but not quite as balanced as I had hoped. Still, very flavorful and pleasant.

The Horn Dog Barleywine is sweet baby! The pour is a deep ruby red. The head is minimal. The aroma and flavor both are full of sweetness. The smell of cherries and sweet malt dominate the aroma. The tastes are of candy, fruits, and maybe brown sugar. The mouthfeel could be thicker, but it is a nice creamy brew. Reminds me most of Moylan’s Barley Wine."

(Bottle (2007) from McKean and Charles) Sweet, hot and sticky...Pours dark brownish amber with a fleeting wisp of biege head that disappears quickly. Appears rather flat and still. Aroma of candyish malt, fairly sharp pine and some grapefruit. Mouthfeel fairly smooth but kind of big and sticky. Syrupy palate with only a little bit of carbonation. Syrupy film coats inside of snifter along with some fine rings of lacing that melt away quickly. Tastes sweet with a pretty strong dose of rock candy maltiness and a very light hint of smokiness. Some piney and grapefruity hoppiness overlays the sticky sweetness with bitterness building toward finish and providing a rather mild (for the style) bite. ABV not particularly well-hidden. Drinkable but not enough complexity for a really good barleywine.

Apr. 2007 - Dark pour, no head or lacing. A sour fruity aroma which was not pleasant. Sickly sweet malty sugary, cherry-like flavor. Very thin bodied, yet not smooth. Pretty bad.
