Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Bottle. Pours a lightly hazy mahogany and a thin but lasting tan head. Aromas of figs, caramel, bubble gum with just a touch of hoppy citrus. Full, sticky sweet body with medium carbonation. Juicy, chewy taste, with caramel, fruit, citrus. Lingering bittersweet grapefruit and fruit finish. It’s pretty much spot on right now,a and it could only get better with aging.

The Horn Dog Barleywine is sweet baby! The pour is a deep ruby red. The head is minimal. The aroma and flavor both are full of sweetness. The smell of cherries and sweet malt dominate the aroma. The tastes are of candy, fruits, and maybe brown sugar. The mouthfeel could be thicker, but it is a nice creamy brew. Reminds me most of Moylan’s Barley Wine."

12oz bottle. Pours a thick, cloudy, deep ruddy brown w/ subtle orange/red/brown highlights and a thin, light tan head. The aroma is big and malty - lots of toffee and caramel with some sweet chocolate, vinous bitter fruit, and subtle smoke. There is some citrus - like orange candy - and alcohol in there, too. The flavor starts malty with a subtle woodiness, lots of sweetness, and some bitter fruit qualities. There is a lot of caramel. This beer is very malty with hints of smoke, a firm hoppy bitterness and subtle notes of spice. The finish has a big bitterness, some bitter flavor from ethanol, and chocolate-covered caramel - mixed with some spice, dark fruit, alcohol, and smoke. The mouthfeel is full in body with somewhat low carbonation. The carbonation is low enough to keep the texture viscous and full with no spritziness but not low enough to feel flat or syrupy. The bubbles are noticeable, just not particularly lively. Overall -much better than I remember (I first had Horn Dog in 2001 or 2002 and at that time it was cloying and hard to drink). This was a drinkable barley wine - not too much caramel or cloying sweetness, not too much hot alcohol flavor.

Aroma of malt, hops, and dried fruits. Very dark brownish red color with tan head. Flavors of roasted malt, figs, raisins, orange peel. Lightly spicy. Sweet with a bitter balance. Carbonation was mild with a lightly creamy palate. Fairly well balanced and drinkable.

Pours a hazy deep amber brown color with a small off white head. Aroma is big and of sweet caramel malt. Taste is also very malty, slightly sweet and nutty. Not a big hop finish in this one.

12 oz. bottle...pleasant aroma. Chocolate and coffee flavors, dark in color, but somewhat light for a barleywine, which can be good. I haven’t tried much of the Flying Dog products but this one I will definitely get again, and perhaps age a bit.

Pours an almost black ruby red with little head. Smells of rich dark fruits and cotton candy sugars . Starts with dark fruit sweetness. Chocolate dipped cherries and brandy flavors are rounded out by subtle citrus rind bitterness. A bit of alcohol tingle finishes this pleasant brew out. Definately saving a few bottles for the years to come. I have a feeling this will age well.

I thought this was a great beer. Aroma of fruit, grain, and a wine like character. Taste hid alcohol quite well. Mouthfeel was full bodied with tastes of carmel and oats. Would buy again. Should rate higher than an 84 however it was a bit sticky.
