Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

This is the last of the "pack" I have yet to try. Pours from a bottle with a rusty, dark brown color and a small off white head. Decent lacing from a very frothy, almost nitrous-tap looking head. Aroma is pungent with citrus and licorice, followed by alcohol. Palate is mostly full, mildly carbonated and almost silky in texture, from the oats I’m sure. Flavor is hugely malty sighting hints of plum, licorice, chocolate and caramel. In the background is again the citrusy bitterness of the hops. Finishes malty sweet with the alcohol warming showing itself. Overall, not as complex as one might want in a barleywine, but for those of us that aren’t huge hopheads, it is an excellent big, malty brew. I’ll try again in a year, maybe a little more complexity. Aged one year: Head is smaller and mostly diminishing. Nose now also picks up notes of apricot, molasses, and vanilla and far less alcohol. Flavor is sweeter and the bitterness is absent until the finish. Palate is similar. Not a great aging; nose is better and complex but other features are fairly similar. Preferred the fresh beer.

Dark color. Smell of malt, hops, fruit, nuts, chocolate, spice, a little oak and syrup. Taste of hops, wine, malt, prunes, apples, fig newtons, syrup and a nice bitterness. This warms your body up. I couldn’t taste the chocolate I originally smelled in the beer. Very high in alcohol taste. Good BW

Pours a very dak color that looks like red velvet chocolate. Small off white head that quickly turns into a little bit of soap on the surface and a nice conssitant ring around the glass. Nose is figs, fruit, raisens, Malt and maybe some alcohol. Mouth feel is medium thickness and has a very soft finish. Taste is malty and of belgian sugar. This is almost like a BW belgian ale hybrid. Intersting but a bit unbalanced in the taste. Nice though.

Another big thanks to Shigadeyo for trading this to me. Pours dark copper/brown with a small light tan head. Aroma is ripened fruits, caramel malts. Flavor is very sweet fruits and sugary malts. Also a little boozy pine. Mouthfeel is very rich and the finish is slightly bitter. Thanks Craig.

Nice malt-oat-hop balance. Not too vinous as so many are in this style. the hint of licorice works. Lots of warming.

[Tasting @ yespr] Hazy brown with large off white head. Sweet fruity and hoppy aroma with caramel and chocolate notes. Sweet flavor with fruity, hoppy and roasted malt notes. Caramel and chocolate notes as well. Ends bitter. Warming alcohol in the end.
