Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Vintage 2003. Served at 55 degrees in brandy snifter. Pours deep brown in color with a slight orange tinge. Head almost non-existant. Pleasant aromas of dark fruit, plum, molasses and caramel dominate the nose over the 10.5% alcohol and hops. Somewhat like the smell of dark fruitcake soaked in dark rum. Mouthfeel was a bit too thin for such high alcohol barleywine. Pleasing sweet flavor matches the aromas quite well, but the alcohol seems to prove a bit harsh early in the finish. Some hop bitterness makes a late appearance. A fairly decent Barleywine from just an so-so brewer.

Strong alcohol flavor, but not as overpowering as many of the other barley wines. Nice blend of alcohol, malt and fruit.

THICK, brown, thick, malty, thick, roasted/sweetness, thick, poured with a huge head that lasted for the first half of the glass (no, i didn’t pour tooo vigorously). Low on hops, or maybe high on malt. A very relaxing beer. Packaged as ’Horn Dog Barleywine’. My beer merchant was suspect about the alc % - he can’t sell 10% in Ohio - his distributor just said ’well, here it is!’ Hooray for lucky me!!! This was very good.

Poured a cloudy and very deep reddish-brown color with a medium but quickly shrinking light tan head. Aroma of dark fruit, slightly aged malt, choclate, and notes of soy sauce. Flavor malty sweet. Dark fruit with some acidity. Semi-dry finish. This bottle has some aged malt flavors. I dont know the age but i don’t think more than a couple years. Warming. Pretty tasty. Nice example.

The aroma reminded me of my grandma’s soap dish, being sweet and effervescent, moderately driven by the alcohol, plus notes of cherry, hairspray, and childrens’ toothpaste. Moderately frothy with some additional grape notes coming out in the flavor, finished with roasted qualities. Amber color. Decent drinking. (8-4-7-4-14) // Re-rate: Classically hoppy, tobacco as it warms, plus sweet grape. Very dark, wood brown. Smooth, low carbonation, smooth, slightly air-filed, frothy. Grape flavor from malts. Nice blend of sweet caramel and hops. (7-4-8-4-15)

Reddish brown body with a creamy tan head. Mine was not too carbonated. Malty sweet nose with a sweet spicy bubblegum(?) taste. Smooth mouthfeel, almost cocoa at times. Warming alcohol is nice. Been available in Ohio all along but shouldn’t have been until now. I’m not complaining. I want to age some and then try it again.

I found this in a back woods liquor store and was surprised to see it was 2003.The nose from this was quite nice, better than a lot of BW’s I have had.sweetness of malt, dark fruits blended together with a strong toffee aroma.Very nicely done. This brew was pretty syrupy but that syrup had a heck of a flavor.Thick mouthfeel.

Bottled. A dark brown beer with a purple hue and no head. the aroma is very hoppy and there is lots of alcohol in the nose. Also noticed is a bit of a floor polish type aroma. The taste is hoppy with orange notes and plummy fruit too. The alcohol comes through but this is not a brash, harsh barley wine, instead it is pleasantly drinkable.
