Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Brown Coloring. Frothy Head. Barley Aroma... Some Roasts Here..Chocolate..Don’t Taste the Licorice.. Some Raisin and Cola Flavors. Slight Warming At the End. Alcohol Hits you Later. Very good Barley Wine..Not Extremely Sophisticated...May Warrant Aging and Trying Again.

12 oz. brown bottle. 2003 A date on it. Poured out a deep mahogany color, bordering on black. Red highlights apparent when held to the light. Fast fading mocha colored head. Aromas right away are of malts, malts, and more malts. Slight licorice in the nose as well. Some dark mascerated fruits in the aromas as well. Burnt caramel, and hops finish out the aroma segment of this beer. Thick body, coats the tongue quite well, thank you. Syrupy in consistency, but enough bittering hops to prevent it from being cloying. Finishes dry and somewhat bitter. Finally, a decent beer from Flying Dog. The rest of their beers require as much attention as this beer received. Maybe the brewers will read this & get on the ball over there.

After storing for 1.5 years, the alcoholic flavors have settled. Alcoholic aroma still present. There is a lot of malt flavor coming out with raisin, grape, toffee, yeast and a slight roasted grain. No lacing or head. Great beer to cellar. Dark brown color. Sweet aroma. Flavor is heavy in alcohol. I’m cellaring one, hoping the alcohol will dissapate. Some caramel/chocolate flavors. Not very hoppy. 2.8

Oh flying dog. I haven’t been too excited with your beers in the past, but look at this, A barleywine! How interesting. Reddish maple syrup color with smallish white head. Looks pretty thick. Aroma is pretty malty with some alcohol tones. Slightly metallic. Flavor is... ooh interesting. A bit more metallic, but good hop presence and some great malt backbone. Fantastic use of spicy and citrus hops. The sweet maltiness backs it up pretty well. Further tasting reveals some nice fruitiness - apples, melon, and raisins, along with some warming alcohol feelings.. good work. In fact, at 10.5%, this is a dangerous brew. Any alcohol flavor is not offputting at all. Flying dog, you won me over.

Poured muddy brown with yeast that suspsends itself within the glass and a tan head. Aroma is heavily malty, almost has a chewy sensation in the aroma. Slight chocolate and bread make up the rest of the aroma. Flavor is really sweet malt, with fig, raison, and slight chocolate. Mouthful is oily and it leaves a film. Finish is slightly dry with an alcohol warming sensation. Fine tasting and underated. Got this for $2.49 for a 12 oz and it was a steal.

Huge malt aroma with licorice and...this sounds weired, but it kind of has the olfactory equivelant of the texture of liver. I know it sounds odd, but it leaves me that impression. Deep garnet color with no head at all. Sweet malt and strong black licorice flavors...a hint of sasparilla and a rounded smooth finish. Pleasant to sip at.

Very dark brown in color with an unfiltered, opaque visibility. Head is tan colored and forms well when poured but dissapates quickly. Aroma is rich, milk chocolate and in your face. Caramel lies underneath and some alcohol as well. Aroma alone lets me know that this beer is huge with thick malt sugars intensifying the aroma as it warms. Concentrated unfermented malt sugars surround the english hop flavor, higher alcohols, and underpinning bitterness. Reminds me of a big English-style Barleywine/Old ale. The syrupy sweetness, the concentrated maltiness, the pungent initial bitterness and straightforward character should intensify in complexity with sherryish and madeira-like qualities. One for aging for sure.
