Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

12oz, no date. Clear deep ruby brown with some floaties and a short-lived beige head. It’s been a while since I’ve had one of these, and Duane helped me out with this. Smells better than I remembered. Plenty of raisins, toffee, and anise (to a lesser extent) to go around. Alcohol is not even trying to hide, and the spice element I’m picking up might be the alcohol, but I can’t tell. There is also a dry wood characteristic in there. Flavor continues with hints of tobacco. Raisins and scorched caramel dominate, though there is still the snise and dry wood. Light tart cherries emerge as this warms, getting a little more vinous as well. Finish is semi dry with bitterness peaking at a 3 that lingers a bit. Full body with light carbonation. Pleasant surprise--much better than I remember it.

12 fl oz bottle. Pours deep dark red with a creamy tan head. Smooth barley aroma, mild chocolate note. Flavour is smooth caramel malty, a little liqourice hops edge, smooth chocolate and a nice alcohol warmth. Ends with a nice level of bitterness, warming alcohol and smooth chocolate/caramel malt.

bottle. Pours a dark amber, with some reddish hues near the bottom of my tulip. Aroma is very pronounced caramel malts, raisins, and alcohol. Taste is rich caramel, some raisins, figs, plums, with some alcohol warm and bitter hops in the finish. pretty well done.

Pours a burnished red that sits dark in the glass. Shows deep ruby in the light. A thin lightly creamy mocha colored head sits atop. The nose is of sweet candy, dry vinous alcohol, caramel, English character, light licorice and molasses. Thick sweet flavor, strong molasses and licorice, dry alcohol, smooth round character. Palate is full and lets you know there’s carbonation there without distracting. Warms on the way down, not a bad BW.

12oz bottle stored at about 55* for about 9 months before rating. A dark brown pour with a sweet aroma of dried fruit, mostly raisins. An initial sweetness that gives way to a bit of a bitter then smooths out to a sweet even mouthfeel. The 10.5 doesn’t come through like I would have thought. Good carbonation and not thin at all. I remember drinking a couple of these the weekend I bought them. This bottle does seem to have mellowed a bit if memory serves me correctly. I liked it then and like it more now.
