Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

12 oz bottle: Aroma is big on malt, caramel, hard candy, dark fruit like plum, and somewhat of a hop backing. Pours a very dark muddy red/amber with a thick tan head that lingers. Taste is really sweet, again with the plum, malt coming through, caramel candy, and a light nuttiness. Palate is heavy on the tongue with an aftertaste of a lingering caramel malt flavor. Overall, Decent Barleywine I think I’m drinking this a little too young but decent all around. Cheers!

Bottle from Duane, thanks Dad. Dark, dark copper pour with a smallish head and minimal lacing. Caramel and sugary malty aroma. Big malt aroma and not much in the way of hops. Big malt flavor, not too complex and not what I would expect from a barley wine, but flavorful enough to be interesting.

Amber to brown beer, no head(poured to cold). Fruity and sweet malty aromas. Fruity, licorice, hoppy and roasted taste with some coffee and chocolate near the finish. Fruity, sweet and bitter, alcoholic finish. Nice barley wine, but i’ve had better ones.

light brown colour, has a bit of a sweet malt aroma, okay body, has a sweet molasses taste with a hint of licorice, gives a bit of a hop element at the end.

Pours from bottle (Vintage 04A) black and tawny, little to no head. Typical barley wine sniff of malt. Black forest. Or caramel cooked 10 seconds too long. But good. Is that rosemary hiding in there? Great bottlelabel by the way. Taste: much different than Sierra Nevada Bigfoot and Brooklyn Monster; a taste all its own, though maybe not quite as good as the two afore mentioned. Not licorice. Sugar free caramel, chocolate, malt malt malt. Malted milk and Pepsi? Yes, that’s it. Nice pallet, slow to drain. Coats the throat. Neat warming barley wine alcohol kick. When to drink this? Before sex, but not before breakfast. 75%.

Draught at the Down Under Pub in Durham, NC. Hazy ruby brown color with tan head that laced the glass. Cotton candy, alcohol, and anise aroma that come out again in the flavor. Sweet, with alcohol melting into your tongue and rising into your nose. A good barley wine.

Pours a red tinged dark brown with a very thin head that disappears very quickly. There’s almost no lacing to speak of. Smell; strong dark fruits, molasses, caramel malts and hints of alcohol. Taste; those dark fruits stand out up front with figs and raisins. There’s also sweet molasses and caramel malts followed by a nice hop bitterness and a bit of an alcohol bite. Mouthfeel is full and a bit oily. This is by far the best Flying Dog brew I’ve had so far.

From a 12 oz. long neck brown bottle with no bottled/freshness date. Sampled at cellar temperature. Made a good appearance, poured a cloudy milk chocolate brown with a small foamy head that settled into a thin bubbly lacing, moderate carbonation. Had a nose of caramel and butter, spicy alcohol and ripe date and fig fruity. A smooth full bodied mouth feel, good drinkability. Big malty taste, caramelized and a little sour bready, spicy subtle alcohol, fig fruity, a mild hop bite and a spicy, grainy and alcohol warm finish. A nice barley wine from Flying Dog, warming and tasty. The artwork on the bottles is by Ralph Steadman.
