Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

(12 oz bottle: ScottVacula’s Barleywine Party ’04) The nose is strong alcohol, sweet and malty, and unfortunately, smells better than it tastes; The flavor is sweet, sugary, fruity, malty, and moderately bitter, which sounds good, but just didn’t do much for me; Sweet and sticky palate is a bit harsh in the finish; Dark ruddy brown color; Tan head fades to a rim and slight sheen, leaving some lacing on the glass; Overall not a bad barleywine, but probably still a bit hot and harsh, and it would probably benefit from a few years of aging

Very nice beer. Mellow, root beer and vanilla tastes. Sip this one. Characteristics of conoisseurship reek throughout this one, worthy of the name "barley wine". Yet raring enough to make you want to go shag like a horn dog.

Advertised as a barleywine, I’m not sure if it is. Almost too bitter for the style; more like an imperial IPA. Very good; flavors of sweet maltiness and bitter hops. Has decent head retention, lacing, and a clear garnet color. This is good, and the 10.5% ABV is almost undetectible. Once again, a great beer from the brewers who give beers goofy names.

Bottle. Pours a dingy brown with a small head and sweet and fruity aromas. Flavor is decent but alcohol gives a bit of a zing that can be obnoxious. Dark fruit flavors, toffee malt and a peppery hops finish...

12 oz. bottle. sweet aroma. dark brown pour with an off-white head and creamy lace. lots of licorice for a BW. not what I’ve come to expect for the style, but still pretty good evening sipper.

Barley field aroma, also had that smell of drinking a red wine also. Brown body had decent head and good lacing left on glass. Had a rich chocolate flavor. Just looked at alcohol content, it is hidden in this beer. Would of thought with out looking this tasted like a 6% alcohol beer. Rich malty presence on the palate. A good beer.

Pours a dark brown with a small off white bubbly head. This actually smelled like Twizzlers...the strawberry kind. Other things I was picking up include raisin, plum and some caramel. Flavor is sweet and malty. Pick up some of the hops in the flavor as well. Not one of the top Barley Wines. But still very solid one. Alcohol was well hidden behind the malty sweetness.

Pours an opaque ruby and brown, not cloudy at all but deeply colored enough not to let alll the light through. I swear this beer is getting darker, or else losing its reddish color, as the glass empties. A very thin tan head vanishes almost instantly after the pour. Not even a fleck of foam remains. There is a very sweet and alcoholic smell. I detected no hoppiness in the aroma. There is a nice hops/malt balance in the initial taste, and the malt wins in the end. The malt flavor is roasty, with a hint of spice or dark plum. I am surprised at how lightly carbonated this beer is, even for a barleywine. Definite alcohol in the aftertaste, but unfortunately no lingering hops. A dark brown yeast sediment stayed behind in the bottle, I swear none of it came out with the pour. I did not swirl and add the yeast to see if it would change the flavor and complexity, perhaps I will next time.
