Aromas are sweet malts and berries with molasses and bready yeast. Lightly spicy and vinous with woody herbal notes. Flavours are sweet toffee mailts with spiced resinous oranges. Fruity and moreish with nice spicy pine. The alcohol is not too harsh. A good warming brew. JoeM500 (1876), Chicago (little italy), Illinois, USA

Much better than i expected, this barleywine is sweet and malty with chocolate and alcohol being the dominant tastes. Big bodied and warming, with a nise touch of bitterness at the finish, along with the firey dryness. PorterPounder (3148), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 20, 2003 Probably one of the best of the Flying Dogs that I have had. Starts off with a thick liver colored pour with copious amounts of mocha colored foam - leads to good think lacing. The aroma has some brandy essences to it with a touch of molasses. Has some caramel, dates and raisins in the flavor. Not as much hops as I would expect in a Barley Wine though. The 10.5% ABV is apparent but not overwhelming or distracting. Nice thick mouthfeel. Flying Dog did a decent job on this one - still hate their labels though - but this is is easier to read than most. wilkie (1192), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

strong malty flavor with an alcohol burn that is
not that bad. Smooth, like a good strong liquer.

The aroma is toffee, leaves, and a pleasant mustiness. The taste begins fairly sweet more like an English style barleywine. As you drink the tastes of anise, bread, cola and sherry all come to play. This is a nice complex, yet fairly light bodies barleywine. Nice. I am aging a couple more of these. madsberg (5059), Søborg, Denmark
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 12, 2007 Bottled. Dark brownish red coloured. Huge brown dense head. Aroma is quite bready and sweet. Has caramel notes and some ripe fruits like raisins and dades. A bit liqourice and alcohol notable. Flavour has some herbal notes. Is full fo liqourice and ripe fruits. A bit soapy. Has a light alcohol bite and a tad of a harsh note. Is medium bodied. Has some caramel and fruits in the end. Sweet and syrupy. Nice without standing out compared to other barley wines I’ve tried. presario (3002), Calgary, Alberta, Canada
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 19, 2005 I don’t think that it stands out among Barley Wines but I found it to be very enjoyable and delicious. I would certainly drink more of these. I looked at the graphs and it seems to be trending higher so perhaps they have tweaked the recipe. Very dark, no head. Inviting spicy aroma and taste. The spices and flavuors seemed to be more nutmeg like and less cinamon. Perkeo (318), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jan 30, 2006 Dark murky brown, definitely english influenced, complex interplay of malty and spicy elements, warming but clean alcohol with a firm but not overpowering hop backbone...there is, however, a slight cardboard like element in the finish that would suggest oxidation.
