Commercial Description:
Big malty flavors, including licorice and chocolate, are balanced with a moderate hop profile. Brewed with copious amounts of prized malts and flaked oats, the Barley Wine is so strong that it has to be aged for several months before we can bottle it. Like a fine wine, it will continue to improve with age up to 2 years after bottling (If kept cool).

Bottle. Nose is very fruity, primarily strawberries, with other sweet notes. Ruby red clear color. Flavor is lots of dark, dried fruit. Creamy and enjoyable palate.

Thanks to Nate for cracking this. Big toffee and apple nose. Sticky and quite sweet this is a perfect dessert beer. Quite smooth but perhaps may be cloying in large doses (as most BWs are in my opinion). Pretty good actually and a good finish to a good day of beer tasting.

Pours a dark mohagany and smells of malts and licorice. This is a pleasant barley wine on both the nose and mouth. Alcohol is nicely balanced by sweet malt flavors. nice.

THOUGHTS: Not bad, but there just seemed to be something missing. It reminded me of a slightly watered down version of North Coast Old Stock. A rather chocolatey barley wine. Doesn’t hid the alcohol all that well, but it isn’t harsh either. Pleasantly warming. A little more hops in the flovor than in the aroma. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium, muddy brown with a small, off-white head that just about fully dimished. The aroma was heavy caramel and chocolate malt and light to moderate hops with som alcohol. The initial flavor was moderately sweet, while the finish was heavily sweet and light to moderately bitter. The body was medium to full and like watery syrup with fizzy carbonation and a slightly metallic and alcohol finish.

330ml Bottle. Pours dark amber with very small head that was gone in seconds. Tastes is like malts, alcohol, fruits. Nice beer for coming cold nights.

12oz bottle pours a hazy dark burgundy color, with a minamal amount of tan head. There was not as much of an alcohol warmth as I would expect from a 10.5% brew. Another good Flying Dog beer.

12oz bottle from Kingdom Liquors (Tampa, FL). Pours a dark brown amber color with reddish orange highlights and a thin off-white head. Aroma is sweet and malty with notes of bourbon, booze, ripe dark fruit, tart cherries, hints of vanilla, brown sugar and hints of caramel and light spice. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of booze, brown sugar, molasses, ripe dark fruit, and hints of chocolate and anise. Generally medium body with a carbonated finish.

It’s barley wine and not available here that much so every new one I can taste is bound to get a positive rating. Nothing earth shattering but still a nice sweet barley wine, missing the crucial bite to make this much more than an above average barley wine in my books.
