Sweet, dark fruit taste. Malty with hint of licorice. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Have kept on hand on for personal consumption ever since I tasted. TikiE (360), Sylva, North Carolina, USA

Pours smooth with small head and it looks a blackish purple, looks like coke. Tastes sweet, but basically tastes like it should be a manly wine. deepsouth (23), biloxi, Mississippi, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | May 2, 2008 i drank this one from a rochefort glass.
this beer poured a deep dark red raisinish color and if there was one bubble, there were a million. i poured these as i usually do, pretty hard and get the same usual no head with a tan ring around the edge of the glass and a few patches of tan swimming around the top of the glass. as for trying to see through this one, forget it. not on flying dogs time.
the smell is quite good. very fruity and again raisiny. usually the booze scent is faint at first and develops over time on me with this one, but this one just got the once over in the cooler, so i can actually smell the booze from jump street. a pleasant one on the sniffer.
the taste is fruits, figs, dates, raisins, booze. i love the taste of this beer. i’d go out on a limb and say this beer would taste best near room temperature. very warming on the way down.
the mouthfeel is pretty medium. where’d the bubbles go? i don’t taste much carbonation, at least not near what i’d expect with the bubbles bubbles bubbles.
a very drinkable beer. so drinkable, i find time to treat myself to about one of these per week and keep a pretty healthy stash around the house. my favorite offering from flying dog so far. they got this one right for me. i actually haven’t drank more than one of these at one sitting and i can’t imagine that more than two could be anything but detrimental to your ability to walk or function for that matter.
highly recommended in my opinion.
i also plan on laying three or four of these down for future reference. i think it’s a keeper.

Very pleasant, complex sweet aroma with heavy roasted, molasses malts and herb hops with a hint of celery. Taste is not as complex with soft carbonation and an unexpected bitter finish. A nice beer overall. For a beer with such a high alcohol content, it’s very drinkable. BeerBiker (1392), Kathmandu, Nepal

Not better than anchor old foghorn, but for the people it’s great. Sweetness is comfortable and the alcohol is nice bitter and soft. Heavy nose of berries and dried fruits. Warming and long lasting. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 27, 2008 Tremendous, majestic purple body with a head that forms a brownish, thick ring which settles nicely into an intimidating, murky pool... grape and malt dominate with chocolate and sweeter hints following (licorice, the label suggests)... yeasts are subtle and complex... WARM...curls around the tongue with minimal effervescence... a flourish at the throat... full-bodied with a lingering aftertaste.... strong, malty--grapish tastes, almost of merlot--instantly warms with a pungent punch and slyly leaks some chococlate flirtations at its finish... the Flying Dog select mixpack has been solid, and Horn Dof befits its style with accuracy, smoothing out by mid-glass and numbing pleasantly... thebeertourist (2822), Oslo, Norway
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 7, 2007 Bottle. Mahogny with a good tan head. Potent raisins and nuts aroma. Good raisins, chocolate and nutty flavours- and caramel for sure. Not very hoppy and the alcohol is well-hidden. Full-bodied and soft without being sirupy. A hit-but then what would you expect from his brewer? ChainGangGuy (2616), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 16, 2008 Appearance: Pours an opaque, dark reddish-brown body with a scattered, off-white head.
Smell: Sweet-smelling, malty aroma with notes of toffee, roasted grains, ripe plums, and with a full, everpresent, evergreen pine scent.
Taste: Sweet maltiness tasting of toffee candy. Plum fruitiness. Slight roasty coffee and woody hints. Piney, resinous hop character and moderate bitterness which hits right about the time the warming alcohol does. Finishes that’s all at once bitter, sweet, warming, and that roasty touch that won’t go away.
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Well, I will say it’s one of the better beers in the Flying Dog line-up.
