Commercial Description:
Brewed in the centuries old tradition of German beers, our brewers use more wheat and proprietary yeast to give it the unmistakable character of a flavorful, authentic Hefeweizen. The High proportion of wheat gives In Heat its smooth, full-mouth feel and our special yeast gives it its unique fruity and spicy aroma.

This poured a cloudy golden yellow color with a white head. Aroma was pretty bland, but with hints of sweetness, wheat and some banana. Flavor was fairly watery, some slight spices, banana and wheat. Not much going on here.

Bottle. Clear yellow. No head. Aroma and flavor is little fruity, banana and some hops. To watery and flat. A disappointment.

Pours pale gold orange with a nice white head. Perhaps a touch dark for style. Nose has typical hefe characters with a bit more citrus and sweetness. Palate translates well. Some malt sweetness (munich i assume) as well as some feint citrus hops. Finishes with zesty wheat notes and citrus aswell as some very subtle banana clove. Well made and quite drinkable but very much a new world hefe.

A me piacciono molto le birre pulite e tranquille, ma questi americani non sono tanto capaci a fare una weizen come si deve...

A brewery doesn’t have to constantly push the outer limits of brewing to be a good brewery. I love a finely crafted session beer just as much as I love an eye-opening nuclear explosion of flavor mushrooming atop my tastebuds. Flying Dog brewing is one such brewery that, while it may dapple in the extreme arts at times, its heart and soul are good, old-fashioned sessionable brews. Presenting herself before me today is their cleverly named In-Heat Wheat, a German inspired hefeweizen of reputable accord.

Hazy golden straw glistens and sparkles while soft tufts of pure white clouds mingle lazily in a haze. A gentle layer of foam lingers from start to finish, while nothing can interrupt the billowing bouquet of classic German aromas mingling with their American counterparts. Orange and citrus backed by soft bananas and banana bread, wheat, and pungent clove. There is definitely no fear of the clove here. Our first meeting is thick and rich. Soft, moist, and chewy bananas atop warm banana bread sprinkled with cooked nuts. Clove permeates every porous core of In-Heat Wheat while her super-soft mouthfeel soothes with each subsequent quaff. Despite her full body, soft chewy mouthfeel, and gracious palate of flavors, she is easy to drink and excitingly thirst-quenching. A breath of spice lingers, just in time to bid farewell as all good things must come to an end.

Not many American Hefeweizens are able to pull off a proud showing of the traditional German palate. Flying Dog does just that with their In-Heat Wheat. The typical American characteristics of orange and citrus definitely take back-stage while the cloves, bananas, nuts, and wheat took center stage. I shall gladly quaff another.

Bottle. Cloudy, golden color with a thin white head. Banana, clove and some lemon zest on the nose. Initial flavor is grassy bubblegum with a lingering clove finish. Despite the flat appearance it is softly carbonated. Syrupy mouthfeel with an artificial sweetness. Not bad but a little more carbonation is needed IMO.
