12 oz bottle from variety pack. Gold pour with a white head, citrus and almost a banana smell. A nice flavor, and I like the label... :) Not a bad summer ale, it’s got more flavor than the SA Summer Ale I just had at dinner. Not bad.

Achèté à Sawyer’s Market à Southwest Harbor, Maine, bouteille de 355 ml (12 oz). Blonde blanchie brumeuse, peu de collet. Arome de blé malte effervessant, un peu de banane et d’épice. Goût de blé peu malté, drole d’épice et une arrière goût de crais faible. O.K?

Bottle: Golden pour with a small white head. Nose is mild of maltiness and citrus. Taste is malty, citrus, and wheat. Balanced seems accurate enough, although there is not much flavor intensity to balance. Good summer brew for the 90* and up days.

12oz bottle from Florian’s. Hazy yellow body with virtually no head. Smells sweet, with banana and a bit of smoke. Tastes like banana, yeast, and a bit of lemon and malt. Fairly tasty and very drinkable. By no means is this a hef like it says on the label, but it’s a tasty beer and an easy drinking one for the summer.

Hazy pale yellow with a generous white head leaving nice lace down the glass. Wheaty citrus aroma, faint sweet spices. Very wheaty, lightly citrus palate, sugary finish. Not a bad hefe.

Several American breweries claim their wheat offerings are true German Hefes...they are mistaken. Sam Adams Hefe is a watery bland example. The brewers at Flying Dog with their terrible names ’dog in heat’? and their ugly labels, none-the-less make an excellent example of what a bottled Hefeweizen should taste like. A murky wheat beer that is full bodied. The wheat stings your tongue, almost that numbing feeling of a true wheat beer. Very cloudy when poured and the hop aromas spell outward.

Pours very clear and gold with a medium-sized white head consisting of large bubbles (almost like the head of ginger ale - albeit longer lasting). I would think the beer should be categorized as Crystalweizen, not Hefeweizen because - from its clarity and absence of cloudiness - I would guess that it is filtered. The aroma is strong with sweet malts and wheat. There are also hints of banana and spice, too - but very subtle. The flavor starts malty and wheaty with a touch of acidic bite. The middle of the tongue detects more bite from a mix of fruity esters and high levels of carbonation. The finish is very long and smooth - medium to slightly-dry in body. The mouthfeel is thick compared to how light and delicate the flavor is - but still only medium in body with very high levels of carbonation (not an unpleasant level). Overall, this weizen isn’t as good as the Stoudt’s Weizen I just had, but it is decent.
