Off-target shot at the style...but damn if I don’t admire the attempt. Basically sweet pale malts, high ABV, strong fruity belgian yeastiness, and a complete lack of subtlety, all combining in a misguided conglomeration that is too overt, obvious, and over-the-top. Better luck next time, boys.

Cute little 7oz bottle (for some reason), 2008 vintage. Poured hazy medium golden with a short cap of off-white head and plenty of rising carbonation. The aroma centered around the pils malts with more than enough rough alcohol amplification.. grassy and wheaty accents with lighter peppery spicage.. hot and really not pleasant. The flavor also had the amped-up pils malts with mild fruits at the core.. black pepper joined grassy and herbal bitterness at the edges.. strong at the finish. Medium-plus bodied with higher carbonation on the palate.. drier on the back.. lacked subtlety.

Small white head, dies quickly, no lace. Hazy gold color. Nose is lightly sweet malts, faintly spicey. Med/light body, oily on the palate, coating, lifeless. Sweet malts, sugars, lightly bready, doughy. Lightly sweet and spicey finish.

Not so bad. Belgian yeast and candi sugar is there. Light spice, coriander, a little citrus, and some wheat. Gold color and just a little cloudy.

Good enough for me. Neat bottle, maybe a little too all over the place, but a decent tripel. Alcohol mixed in nicely with some citrus, banana, herbs. A bit yeasty and fun.

The aroma is fitting for the style. It’s got that yeasty malty mess with alcohol, fruit, and hops in the background. The appearance is orange gold with a small sudsy head that fades fast. The flavor is mildly sweet with a much stronger hop presence than the aroma suggested. The bitterness peaks up front then comes back at the end mostly due to the high alcohol taste. Its a little funky but in a good way. Its also a little citrusy. The palate is thin. Overall not bad but not great.

Hey, not to knock all of the traditional raters, but for half the price, this Tripel is about as good as some of the standards out there.

12oz bottle. Pours a yellow-brown color with a thin, wispy white head. The smell of yeast predominates and overshadows other, more subtle aromas. Sickly sweet yeasty, fruity flavor with a fairly strong alcohol finish. One of Flying Dog’s weakest offerings.
