Commercial Description:
Brewed in the tradition of centuries old Scottish brewing methods, "Road" is reminiscent of a Porter. Road Dog is a rich, malty beer with hints of chocolate and licorice resulting from the use of four prized malts.

Color is very, very dark garnet color witha moderately full, beige, pillowy head which has moderate longevity and leaves some random lacing. Nose is weak and boring; notes of toasted bread crust, light smoke, and faint chocolate, maybe a bit of an abstract, tannic, vinous note. Flavor is better but only by a slight margin; notes are mainly chocolate with light toasty notes, smokey notes, and faint anise. Palate is medium to thin, watery, and soft to lively. Finishes a bit drying with smoke, light bitterness, and some faint hints at the tannic notes. A very curious beer to say the least. More like a dark brown ale with scottish hints (smoke), and an abstract, vinous, tannic note. Could be more interesing if it were better put together.

Could not imagine this is actually listed as a porter. Weak sour aroma, with a faint smell of malts. Flavour is fruity, but no roasted malts or chocolate. Disappointing.

Bottle. Came in a variety pack of other Flying Dog brews. Pours dark brown with a nice small head. Malts and chocolate aromas abound. Smooth and creamy mouth feel. So far my favorite of the 12 pk.

Bottle from Utobeer. 6%. Very deep ruby/brown with thin light tan head. Fairly restrained aroma of murky coffee and touch of choc. Some dark fruits and some cheap end supermarket dark choc. Touch of smoke. But as I say, a very restrained porter, some ashtray towards the end. Drinkable, but restrained and a bit too much ashtray. 2.8/5.0 Re-rate Bottle at EBF 08. Blackberry and blackcurrant comes through. That’s a really good fruity porter, the blackcurrant really sings. Gorgeous.

Sampled on draught at Flying Dog: poured a dark reddish brown colour, close to black. Head was tall and fluffy tan top. Aroma was very pleasent, rich, with a great nutty character- sweet, roasted malts, ginger and a little bit cocoa.

Bottle. Dark brown color. Roasted malt and onion (!) in the aroma. Roasted malt, caramel and laurel in the flavor. Fairly thin. Nice roastbitter and coffee aftertaste. Somehow this beer grows on you.

Pours a translucent brown with a small white head. Aroma of chocolate, caramel and malt. Flavor is malt, hints of chocolate. Very thin bodied brew with some good flavors but overall found it to be a little lacking.
