Commercial Description:
Brewed in the tradition of centuries old Scottish brewing methods, "Road" is reminiscent of a Porter. Road Dog is a rich, malty beer with hints of chocolate and licorice resulting from the use of four prized malts.

Pours a clear dark brown with a coppery-red hue when held to light and a 1-2 finger chunky beige head that has really good retention. Aroma is roast, light peaty smoke, caramel, a hint of woody character and some herbal/earthy hops. Flavor is roast, light smoke, a little char, burnt sugar, burnt marshmallow and some light grassy, herbal and mineral notes toward the finish, which is oddly quick and leaves just a light smokey linger. Palate is on the thin side of medium with a somewhat fervent, very sharp carbonation and a somewhat creamy entry leading to a pretty dry slightly chalky finish. I really don’t like this stuff as much as I once did, I’m not sure if the recipe changed or I did, but it doesn’t seem as good as it was the last time I had it. Not bad, but it seems like a watered down version of something really good.

12oz bottle. Pours a clear, brown colored body with a reddish tint. Finger-width, creamy, tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a good amount of lacing. Aroma is malty and moderately sweet. Some wet caramels, a faint chocolate, a light berry fruit, and some earth. I wouldn’t really classify this aroma as "porter-like." I don’t pick up any roasts and I know this is listed as a "road" porter, but still...come on. Flavor is greeted with some thinner caramels and a light chocolate maltiness. Some earth and peat along with a light to moderate, dirty scotch bitterness come in making this malty, but flavorable. Smooth and somewhat dry with a short, bittersweet aftertaste. A hint of sharp licorice and some nuts as well. Medium body. Overall, not quite what I was expecting. Not really any roast profile, but the bitterness was enjoyable and the malts were pleasant. The aroma was sub-par, but the flavor made this drinkable. Porter? No. More like a lightly bittered brown.

12 ounce bottle in pint glass. Dark brown with tan ring. Mild chocolate and earth and peat aroma. Chocolate with strong scotch whiskey peat earth and dark fruit. Carries more scotch whiskey than some barrel-aged beers. Overall, lacks nice smooth richness and roastiness. Decent enough.

Very Very Very average porter, nothing really stood out and made me want to go buy more. Poured a lighter shade of brown than most porters, not much head, Aroma was chocolately and almost a little oily to me. Taste was rather bland of chocolate and a hint of alcohol. just not my favorite beer

Has a nice brown color when poured with minimal foam. Has aromas of chocolate and coffee. It has a smooth taste and is pretty refreshing.

12th August 2008. Very light malty porter with a bit of a light fruity tang. Other than that it’s a pretty straight beer. Quite light compared to many other porters.

Pours a dark brown. Aroma of toasted malt and chocolate. Taste is chocolate with a toasted malt undertone. Has a slightly sweet finish. Good, but the flavor is very subtle and almost bland. I with it had a little more kick.
