Commercial Description:
Hunter S. Thompson once said, "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Consider this our professional version of Gonzo Imperial Porter. Aged and seasoned for three months in wood barrels from our neighbors at Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, this ale has a well-balanced taste and abundance of character. The taste will remind you of sweet chocolate, dry oak, and smooth whiskey with a memorable, velvety mouthfeel.

Bottle sampled. This was an expensive bottle, but worth it. Pours dark with a decent size compact khaki colored head. Aroma of roast, sweetness, chocolate, wood, and alcohol. The flavor is smooth, roast, chocolate, sweet, oak, and traces of bitter hops in the finish. Good brew.

Sampled at the RBSG ’07 Grand Tasting room. Pours a hazy dark brown brew with a foamy tan head that slowly dissolves. Aroma of sweet milk chocolate, coffee, and a touch of vanilla with flowery hops. Taste is smooth, medium bodied, with flavors of chocolate and bourbon. Finish is slightly sweet and fruity. Nice oaky aftertaste.

Bottle. Head is initially huge, frothy, dark brown, fully lasting. Body is black (flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain, chocolate), moderately to heavily hoppy (resin), with notes of tar, alcohol, corn, alcohol, and ashes. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter, slightly husky. Medium to full body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Not too far removed from the regular Gonzo; doesn’t seem like it was aged in barrels very long. Rough and crude.

I don’t believe this lived up to the hype. The aroma was roasted coffee and some hops. The flavor wasn’t tht great, roasted coffee for sure with some oak and maybe a few hints of vanilla all ending fairly bitter.

RBSG 07. Nice, and the barrel might have helped it. Aroma has malt and hops, as well as oak. Flavor has more malt, more hops, and surprisingly port. Very smooth palate, and a lightly carbonated, black beer like and English imperial stout.

RBSG 2007 Grand Tasting - Black, fizzy tan head. Nose was light with vanilla smoke tones and touches of chocolate coffee and wood. Bland flavors of dark roast coffee, vanilla oak, and bittersweet chocolate throughout. Light to medium bodied, moderate carbonation, dry woody finish. Barrel actually ruined it in my humble opinion....
