| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 9, 2009 Thick as velvet and black as night, my Wild Dog burbled and broiled with a burnt khaki head before slowly settling into a rich, sticky, velvety cushion of khaki love. A few swirls produce sumptuous puffs that release pheromones of fresh roasted coffee beans as I stand atop a misty covered mountain, surrounded by the soothing aromas of nature: wood, vanilla, raisins, plums, caramelized sugars, cinnamon, and a whiff of rum. Did someone spike my coffee, er, Wild Dog? For all her complexity, her nose is surprisingly soft and I have a feeling that is going to translate into her body and palate. My first sip is soft, frothy with a creamy mouthfeel which is a menagerie of soft wood and sweet, succulent prunes, raisins, figs, and dates. A tart tingle on the top of my tongue reminds me of cherries picked fresh off their tree, crunchy and tart. My breath exudes warmth, spices, rum, and vanilla esters while a soothing calm creeps into my being. I am amazed at how soft and gentle her body is, especially in comparison to the original Gonzo Imperial Porter. For a big beer, Wild Dog is highly drinkable, and I waste plenty of time savoring every single drop of her divine blessings. Looking back, warm sweet memories of succulent dark pitted fruits, soft wood marked with vanilla, rum and spice while tart crunchy cherries add a little pep to her step.
I don’t hate to say it; I love Wild Dog far more than I do his predecessor, Gonzo Imperial Porter, further proof that wood is where it is at. A biased opinion? Yup. But isn’t that half of what taste is: personal opinion. Granted, it should never be baseless, but one taste of the Wild Dog Barrel-aged Gonzo Imperial Porter from Flying Dog and you will quickly find yourself in eager, mouth-watering agreement. illidurit (897), Santa Cruz, California, USA

Rich chocolate and coffee aroma with hints of wood and ash. Flavor is chocolate and caramel with some smoke, oak, sour mash, and roast. Nice full mouthfeel (unlike the non barrel aged version) and good carbonation. Great beer. jerohen (1615), Bussum, Netherlands

Very complex nose of malts, caramel, liquorice, molasses, wood, and so much more, world class. Sweet malty flavour, coffee, liquorice, hops, lactic notes, nicely balanced. Great mouthfeel. Not overly bitter like many Imperial Stouts. Really, really nice brew, totally my kind of beer. faroeviking (6128), BjórtjóðveldiðBjórheimBjórsins, Faroe Islands

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Apr 25, 2009 A bit like the original but the more subtle notes are drowned out by the very over the top kind of barrel aging. The bourbon notes are everywhere but thank god it is good bourbon. Have to say that I like the original more, this is pretty simple stuff.
