BeerBelcher (749), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA May 1, 2008 Strange, I didn’t really find that the barrel-aging greatly enhanced this beer. While my sampling of the non-aged Gonzo was some time ago, I recall preferring the non-barrel aged version. Nonetheless, this beer was quite rich and good.
Beer poured black with a pretty rich head which lingered and offered good lacing. Roasty aroma with some chocolate but also some off-notes that seemed to me to be cardboard-y and oxidized. Flavor was more rich roastiness (and was good!)t, but also had some oxidized and papery character. Mouthfeel was as expected.
I would recommend this beer, but was hardly blown-away by it. I had this on-tap at Roman’s Pub in Milwaukee.
Rciesla (871), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Oct 9, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown body with a tan head. Lots of roasted malt and whiskey with some coffee bitterness. Lightly accented with the barrel and a good amount of etoh in the finish. trayns (4), Beverly Hills, Michigan, USA does not count Oct 2, 2008 On tap, at Ashley’s at UofM in Ann Arbor. One of the top 3 stouts (don’t be fooled by the name) I have had. The non-aged Gonzo is a fantastic beer, but this version is fuller, deeper, and much more enjoyable. If you can find it, you have to try it. beergod! (44), Houston, Texas, USA Sep 24, 2008 This is one of the best gifts i’ve gotten. It came in a nice wooden box that contained a piece of the barrel the ale was aged in,a nice half pint glass, and a gonzo pin. This ale is just amazing, it pours very dark and smells of a nice vanilla coffee. This ale is full bodied full flavored and very smooth, All in all just a great example of a barrel aged ale!!! jeremytoni (589), Swedesboro, New Jersey, USA Sep 17, 2008 From the tap poured a black color with a fair amount of head. Nice malty flavor with a lingering aftertaste. glkaiser (999), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 14, 2008 Thanks to bitbucket tasting. Almost black with thin head. Sweet malt and some chocolate/coffee with just enough oak and nutty bourbon to let you know it’s there. Solid.
