Ernest (4250), Boulder, Colorado, USA Apr 1, 2008 Bottle.
Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is medium to dark amber.
Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie), lightly to moderately hoppy (resin), with a note of alcohol.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly husky, unclean.
Medium body, watery/syrupy texture, lively/fizzy carbonation, moderately alcoholic, slightly metallic.
Very simple (and Americanized) aroma, and unfortunately pretty unclean and metallic in the finish. Unpleasant. Can’t recommend it.
jrob_21 (887), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Oct 3, 2008 This one came back from Nashville and is a decent drink. Pours clear brown with a bit of a red hue. Decent tan head. Flavor is a little bit of raisin and a nice roasted malt profile. Finish is a little sweet and sugary. Aroma reminds me a little bit of a weak bourbon drink and has a hint of alcohol in there. Butters (422), Temporarily in Nashville, Tennessee, USA Sep 29, 2008 For my 400th rating. Beautiful, brilliantly clear dark clear amber with golden amber highlights and decent sustainable tan head. Aroma is the best part of this brew, rich malt, raisins, plum, caramel, cane sugar, and the faintest hint of alcohol on the tail end. Flavor is a bit of a let down. All the above mentioned in the flavor, but a prevailing hop bitterness joins, and in my opinion, ruins the party. Body is medium thin, but at the same time, ever so slightly syrupy. Too bitter for my taste. But a solid brew nontheless. bradlyc77 (26), Sebastopol, California, USA Sep 28, 2008 Updated: Oct 2, 2008This was a very good doppelbock. Nice dark golden color, very malty, hints of brandy. DTM (395), Winters, California, USA Sep 22, 2008 Shared bottle with Timfoolery. Poured a dark amber color and had the smell of sweet hops. Smooth on the palate, but somewhat bland in flavor. A little bit of spice flavor but not too overpowering. Drinkable, but not a outstanding beer. timfoolery (361), California, USA Sep 21, 2008 Bottle from Wade’s Wines in Westlake Village, CA. From the ratings, you’d think this one was lacking, but I didn’t find that the case. It was very drinkable with a nice maltiness to it and limited bitterness. Octoberfest is right around the corner, and this one was great with a brat!
