750ml corked and caged bottle. This cork was one pain in the ass to get out. Poured dark black, with brown edges, and an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of smoke, roastiness, chocolate, caramel, and coffee. Tastes of smoke, chocolate, lighter roastiness, and coffee.

RFD Tasting – Black, thin tan creamy head. Campfire smoke and salty fried bacon aromas warm to soft notes of maple coffee and hints of breadiness. Smoky flavor up front fades to light sweet meaty chocolate undertone. Very well balanced throughout with just a touch of backend bitterness in the finish. Full bodied and smooth with medium carbonation. A fantastic beer for summer grilling season. I wish it would be considered for the Canis Major Series (12 oz). The 750 ml is quite spendy…

Green 750ml bottle from Sam’s in Downers Grove, IL: It pours an intensely dark brown body with a modest light brown head that rapidly reduces to a ring, leaving only spotty lace. It has an aroma of dark roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, and overly cooked smoked ham. Very smooth to drink. The taste reflects the nose but seems a bit more burnt and somewhat sweeter than anticipated. The finish is chocolatey and smokily dry. Too bad that Flying Dog insists on making this tasty brew cost-prohibitive to enjoy on a regular basis.

Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. Black bodied with a dark brown hue around the edges when up against light. Short, dense brown head. Nose is very smoky like charcoal embers, burnt wood, and smoked sausage with roasted malts and light coffee. Taste is rather sweet and smoky. Burnt tomato and sugar based barbecue sauce, burnt wood, smoldering charcoal, coffee, roasted malt and light chocolate. This is delicious. Body was light-medium with creamy carbonation. Ends with more burnt wood, smoldering charcoal, smoked meats, chocolate, and roasted malt. Very nice!

Bottle… Pours black with a mid-sized, creamy, taupe head. Fantastic retention. Smells like a blend of hickory smoke, espresso grounds and charcoal. Full-bodied and creamy with ticklish carbonation. Tilts toward the sweet side of balance. The flavor is smoky, very roasty and hints heavily at light molasses. Bittersweet, smoky finish with a rumor of cardboard-like oxidation. Bottle provided by scraff!

This poured an almost black color with a light tan headf. Aroma was mild to medium smoke with hints of roasted malts as well. Flavor was pretty smokey, a bit salty, roasted but a bit thin at the same time. Good but not great.

Pours dark brown with nice head. The nose is smokey with some chocolate. Comes across the palate rather sweet, with some bitterness, a little chocolate, heavily smoked lingering finish. Overall, an okay brew that I probably won’t buy again.
