Commercial Description:
Wild Dog Weizenbock is a dark amber wheat beer with a complex fruit and spice character. A smooth, full mouth-feel coupled with signature notes of banana and cloves is chased with a robust and warming edge.

750mL cork and caged bottle. Nice dark copper color, with a cream colored head leaving only traces of lacing. Smell of some banana and clove, but mostly there was a sour smell to it of rotten fruit. Taste is very sour, there is a very small amount of clove in the finish, but this just doesn’t seem right here. Above average carbonation with light to medium body. I just wasn’t impressed with this, seemed more like a sour ale, which is not what I was expecting.

The bad news started when the cork did not make any pop when it came off. Murky brown color and almost still. Melted caramel and malt syrup nose. Caramel, buttered bread, some puffed wheat and alcohol in flavor. Needs more carbonation to liven things up. Shared out of bdigi66’s bottle, so I didn’t pony up the dough for this bottle.

Bottle: Cloudy, light brown with no head. Caramel malt, dark fruit, oak and alcohol in the nose. This tasted very flat and dry. I’m not sure if this is the norm but it was pretty much a turn off. Their were some wheat and oak notes but I just couldn’t get past the mouth feel.

Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse - 750 ml corked bottle. Medium, copper pour, slightly murky - especially the dregs of the bottle - no head. Molasses and olive oil aroma. Flavor is slightly sweet with some caramel, molasses and some overripe vegetable qualities - like a pumpkin left in the sun too long. Slightly cloying and vacant. Smooth mouthfeel - but could not finish this one when that last pour was made. Disappointing to say the least.

I’ve had this 750mL for at least a year now. It was consumed while watching the NL Wild Card Tie Breaker with the Padres playing in Colorado. Seemed a fitting occasion to finally open it and watch a wild game end in a lose, unfortunately. Pours a nice clear amber with thin off white head. The aroma is sweet dark fruit that is almost barleywine like. I smell figs and date puree spread thick over fresh wheat bread. There’s also hints of beat sugar and mild sweet roasted malts. The taste starts fruity with figs, dates, muted boysenberries and plums. The taste turns increasingly malty with rich roasted and caramel malts. Beyond midway mild notes of chocolate malts and a hint of breadiness enter the picture. This has aged nicely. If it was cheaper I’d get more.

750 ml bottle shared at Glouglouburps rooftop tasting. Probably one of the ugliest beers I have seen in awhile. Poured a mudy brown that looked like some dirty ass river water with a bubbly white head. Fruity sweet aroma with notes of chocolate and lots of alcohol. Medium palate with some light carbonation. Flavor is pretty nice with wheat, chocolate, dark fruit, banana, honey and alcohol all being tied together with a big gush of alcohol warming. Not worth the money.

Caged and corked, I poured this monster and was instantly inticed by the nice big-looking reddish, rusty brew with a thin but sticky head. Unfortunately the aroma has the exact opposite effect ... sour and musty, you’d think this was a Flemish red. Indeed this drinks more like a sour ale than any weizenbock I’ve had ... sugary sweet with a tart fruity edge and a musty edge. I flipped thru some of the other ratings and almost wonder if I somehow got a mislabeled bottle or something ... chocolate, banana, clove? Not a chance. Me thinks I was sodomized for $15 on this one. Ouch. (#3103, 9/23/2007)

(Rating #1245)
