Commercial Description:
Wild Dog Weizenbock is a dark amber wheat beer with a complex fruit and spice character. A smooth, full mouth-feel coupled with signature notes of banana and cloves is chased with a robust and warming edge.

Cloudy brown body with almost no head. Caramel and burnt bananas in a yeasty potion. Chocolaty candies and something ice-cream-ish about it. Not bad at all but just not cohesive, felt like this wasn’t the intended result. I hope you like animal sex because at $18 a bottle you’re gonna get screwed by a Wild Dog.

My Bottom Line:
Muddled fruitiness and caramelized residue swirl around the prevalent yeastiness of this unusual Weizenbock which seems to have lost most of its inherent clove and banana generosity.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A thin film of foam dissipates into the murky terracotta.
-Alcohol is apparent in the finish, but not bothersome.
-Wooden hoppiness peers through the yeast.
-Carbonation is too low and the body quite lean, which exposes the rough finish.

Bottle.

dark amber with a slight haze, thin beige head, sweet malt aroma with various spices and a little cooked vegitables, good body, malty with too much cooked veggies, hopefully just a bad sample

750 ml bottle from the Beverage Warehouse in Winooski, VT (spring 2006) sampled in April 2007 from a Duvel glass. Dirty-hazy brown, nearly opaque, with a moderate buff head, fairly persistent; small, tight lacing....caramel-banana-clove aroma is pretty spot-on accurate for the style, though it just doesn’t gel or offer anything interesting; a bit muddled....as is the flavor, overly sweet and caramel-chocolaty, lots of candied bananas but little spice or wheat sourness to counteract things....on the verge of cloying, but fairly strong carbonation saves the mouthfeel somewhat. By the end of the bottle I was starting to enjoy this...starting....not really an impressive example, but I guess kudos for the effort.

750 ML Bottle-Poured a dark red/Mahogany color w/a moderate head. Sweet roasted malt aroma. Sweet flavor of roasted malt & nuts, bark fruit/bananna, caramel/toffee, cane sugar, & bread dough. Full, complex flavor very similar to a fine belgian. Good carbination w/traces of spice. This was quite good, best beer I’ve had from this brewer

Pours a somewhat dark and very cloudy orange-brown that is quite opaque. The yeast in the bottom looks like small specks of dirt. Very little head comes up, but swirling the beer in a snifter to release aromas and carbon dioxide brings forth a flat, creamy, beige head. The foam doesn’t last long but leaves lace on the glass. The aroma is intense: soft fruit (banana, green apples, and a touch of peach) and alcohol are evident quite immediately. Big, doughy, sweet malt and a hint of spice are detectable, too. After a few whiffs you can pick up aromas of wine and perhaps a drop of acidic vinegar - but fruit and malt are the main players. The flavor starts with a big, bold, sweet malt and some spice. There are hints of toffee and chocolate along with loads of fruit (mainly banana). The middle of the tongue picks up fruity yeast, big malty wheat, and just a slight bit of hop bitterness to balance it. The finish is full-bodied, sweet, fruity, and very much reminiscent of a banana-chocolate smoothie. The mouthfeel is unfortunately flat. The lack of carbonation lends a very candy-like quality to the beverage. Overall, this beer is very interesting and palatable - but it needs more carbonation (or perhaps better packaging to keep the carbonation in the bottle), a little less malt (its a bit too much on the sweet side), and a lower price tag (it was quite pricey).

Murky amber, moderate head with blah lacing and retention. Aroma is heavy wheat notes with caramel and banana. This has relatively more malt compared to the German examples, not sure if I prefer that. Enjoyable beer but overpriced and not worthy of such a funky bottle.
