Commercial Description:
This Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel is an exceptionally complex beer with many interwoven flavors. This classic-style Abbey beer features an immense head with a fruity nose and a generous body. Malty in the middle, the beer features a clean, almondy dry finish and a slight alcohol warmth. More like a wine than a beer—it has a lot of the qualities of a fine Burgundy. The beer is bottle-conditioned.

Bottle - from sampler pack. Quite good. Very strong and malty. Very dark. Lightly carbonated. Slightly spicy aroma/flavor.

Appearance: This beer pours darker than I expected for a double. It is purplish brown (I guess you could call it a dark amber). It has a small head that disappears immediately; but it is a very attractive color sitting in my goblet. Smell: Plums, black cherries, brown sugar, caramel, candied malts, maybe a bit of cloves and nutmeg. WOW! The aroma of this beer is extremely enticing! It reminded me of Three Philosophers which is a quad. Taste: As exceptional as the aroma is, it was a small let down that the taste is ’only, really good’. Since when has ‘really good’ been a let down? The first thing that came to mind in the taste was yeast and a bready attribute. The malt character is so rich and smooth it is incredible. There is also a subtle suggestion of chocolate. Then there is an interesting almost orange tart hop character that maybe English hops, anyway it is very mild and pleasantly tart. Mouthfeel: Medium body smooth and slightly chewy. Almost no carbonation. A bit syrupy. Drinkability: This is one of the most drinkable doubles I’ve ever had. It is easy and could nicely pair with a wide variety of foods; from cheeses, hourderves, entrees or desert. I had some chocolate and it was great. Boy this when down so quickly and easily. The 7.3% ABV will catch up to you eventually but this beer still sits very lightly in your stomach. I got this in a trade so I only have one and I would certainly like another. Hope this is helpful. Cheers! THANKS: Thanks to tgbljb for the trade! Heres to finding good beer in Lancaster PA :) Cheers!

The beer pours with a nice, dark caramel color with a white lace and not much of a head. Goes down very smoothly and has a great finish.

On draught at Max’s on Broadway Tap house. Clear dark copper color with a creamy head and lacing. Nice fruity nose with bubble gum notes. Plum, malt, bubble gum, and bread dough in the flavor. Creamy texture. Very drinkable beer.

Not bad. Had on tap in Phillie at the White or Black Cafe. Forget which. Brought in wrong glass. But a decent dubbel and decent malts.

Color was light (ruby tan/brown), the head short lived (but lacing sustained itself well), and the aroma deceivingly present. In the end, the flavor was watered down, matching the color more than the aroma. Very unimpressive stateside "dubbel."

Pours a dark amber brownish color with a medium beige head that fades rather quickly. Aroma is spicy with hints of banana, nutmeg, nuts and alcohol. Taste is a combination of banana, nutmeg, figs and other dark fruits with a slight hint of alcohol. Quite enjoyable and one of Flying Fish’s finest.
