Malty and sweet flavor. A good beer, but just seems to be missing something. Tasty though. duff (5475), Surrey, Greater London, England
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jun 20, 2003 Aroma and start are sweet and yeasty (ribena and apple skins that have been lying in the sun for a while), some plums, grapes and a touch of nuttyness and caramel. I dig the malts, caramelly, nutty, slightly smoky and roasty, plummy, some grapes, light acidity and tartness. Belgian yeast is obvious, nice dry finish to counter the sweetness in the start. In a wierd way i wasn't expecting too much, but i was pleasantly surprised. I dig the lingering nuttyness in your mouth after every sip. daboskabouter (1470), Fergus, Ontario, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 17, 2003 Bright auburn color with a light almond-like head. Funny, I usually like my dubbels to be cloudy. The nose is somewhat yeasty with hints of raisins, sweet malt and some alcohol. The body is also quite sweet with malt with the raisins creating a stir befriending some dark fruity flavours. Some bitterness towards the end finishes off this thick malty dubbel. Not a bad dubbel except lacking some yeastiness, maybe a bit sweet. CapFlu (3483), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Something foreign and salty. Dry finish. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 15, 2003 My bottle didn't have the word "Abbey" on the label, though it's pretty obvious that no abbey was involved since the beer comes from New Jersey. Mine had more of a lasting head than some other raters' Dubbel did. Though it's bottle-conditioned, there were only a few floaties at the bottom of the glass, which disappointed me a tad. Nothing like grossing out others with those yeasty things! The alcohol is well-hidden for 7.3% abv (by contrast, try a Russian strong lager to see an example of poorly-hidden alcohol). Certainly tastes "Belgian" to me, and possesses the proper yeasty character. Quite respectable.
