Commercial Description:
This Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel is an exceptionally complex beer with many interwoven flavors. This classic-style Abbey beer features an immense head with a fruity nose and a generous body. Malty in the middle, the beer features a clean, almondy dry finish and a slight alcohol warmth. More like a wine than a beer—it has a lot of the qualities of a fine Burgundy. The beer is bottle-conditioned.

I enjoyed this beer. Nice reddish color and aroma. One of Flying Fish's better beers.

My bottle didn't have the word "Abbey" on the label, though it's pretty obvious that no abbey was involved since the beer comes from New Jersey. Mine had more of a lasting head than some other raters' Dubbel did. Though it's bottle-conditioned, there were only a few floaties at the bottom of the glass, which disappointed me a tad. Nothing like grossing out others with those yeasty things! The alcohol is well-hidden for 7.3% abv (by contrast, try a Russian strong lager to see an example of poorly-hidden alcohol). Certainly tastes "Belgian" to me, and possesses the proper yeasty character. Quite respectable.

I don't know if this reached the complexity they describe in the commercial description, but this is another solid brew from Flying Fish. Brownish ruby in color with a diminishing head, this dubbel is surprisingly drinkable at 7.3%. Better as it warms, but good throughout from the fruity start to the malty middle and the crisp finish.

This one pours a nice, clear, reddish brown color with a small, off-white head that does not last. The aroma is malty with some light bread notes, yeasty doughiness, and hints of banana and vanilla. Medium body with medium carbonation, the flavor is is malty sweet with touches of banana and caramel. The finish is slightly dry with a touch of nuttiness. A solid Belgian style double.

There is a lot I liked about this dubbel. Very nice ruby appearance and decent aroma. Tastes like they used a good yeast strain that added to its Belgian style characteristics. Enjoyed the subtleties in this beer.

A nice beer, but it really doesn’t seem like a double to me. Not a bad beer, but not a real double.

Reddish amber pour with a thin tan head. Malty and medium-bodied. Slight fruit undertones.
