Commercial Description:
This Belgian-style Abbey Dubbel is an exceptionally complex beer with many interwoven flavors. This classic-style Abbey beer features an immense head with a fruity nose and a generous body. Malty in the middle, the beer features a clean, almondy dry finish and a slight alcohol warmth. More like a wine than a beer—it has a lot of the qualities of a fine Burgundy. The beer is bottle-conditioned.

Clear brown body topped by minimal beige head. Aroma is candy sugar sweet, raisin, toffee, some orange, light cinnamon. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, raisin. Watery light-medium body -- hides the alcohol well.

On tap at the 2004 Kennett Square BF. Poured a medium brownish red color. Lightly fruity. Malty and on the sweet side. Some caramel and dark fruits. Not bad.

Amber body, clear, off-white head. Aroma consists mostly of malty caramel and brown chocolate. Light yeast notes, mild fruits and something creamy also make act of presence. Yeasty chocolate palate. very mild, lightly tart. Light-medium body, medium carbonation. Okay american interpretation on a tough to execute style. Very accessible.

12oz bottle-pours a rich dissipating off white head and amber color. Aroma is sweet medium malt-molasses, spice, yeast. Taste is lots of sweet medium malt-molasses, peat, spice-hops, yeast. Nice, easy drinking, interesting interpretation of the style. Has a dopplebock character. OK carbonation.

Tasted at Eric & Wendy's "Go to Hell, Isabel" Party 2003. Sparkling clear, mohogany ale. Small, fizzy, khaki head. Quickly dissipating. The nose is beefy with notes of horse blanket and leather, straw or hay. Nothing at all special. Some brown sugar, caramel and chocolate notes in the flavor... maybe even dates. Medium-bodied with a silky mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. Good attempt at a difficult and wonderful style, but this example falls way short of my expectations.
