Commercial Description:
An original American pale ale, our XPA highlights the subtle, sophisticated flavors and aromas of our Midwestern two-row malt and imported aromatic and Munich malts. Washington-grown Mt. Hood and Fuggles hops create an extremely balanced beer with a beautiful straw color.

Bottle courtesy of Jabic. Pours a hazy copper with a nice white head. Smells of straw, citrus, doughy. Tastes citrussy and overly sweet.

Sometimes I find that when a brewery falls short on their big, experimental, or complex beers, they instead find a shining moment with their lighter brews. I often find this ironic as it is even harder to hide mistakes in a lighter more delicate beer versus a heavier more complex and diverse beer. After the variety of beers I have tried so far from Flying Fish Brewing, I have found their complex beers not so complex and somewhat disappointing. So it was with even greater trepidation that I approached their Extra Pale Ale.
She poured a slightly hazy straw gold with hints of orange peeking through. A small head fades quickly into almost literal oblivion, leaving only minor traces of her presence in the form of a broken ring around my glass. Her nose is a subtly sweet perfume of oranges and melons. Biscuity malts with hints of caramelized sugars tease my olfactory senses, and if that weren’t enough, a touch of freshly cut grass and pine round it all up with a noticeable hop flourish. If this is just her nose, I can’t wait to try her liquid bliss, and so I do. Sweet and viscous, she lightly coats my mouth and tongue with a thicker body than I expected for an Extra Pale Ale. Lots of malts right up front; biscuits. Butter cream, caramel, sugars, fresh melons, orange, and peaches all dance in harmony along my palate. A slightly dry finish with a tinge of bitterness. The freshly cut grass and pine I got in the nose finds her home in the finish, complementing the initially sweet and malty start. Superbly quaffable, I find my glass empty far sooner than I expected.
So far, I would have to say that the Extra Pale Ale from Flying Fish Brewing is the best of their line-up I have tried so far. For an extra pale ale, she is rich, complex, and satisfying. A great session beer, I only wish I had another to enjoy.

Golden color with a only a few off-white bubbles floating on top. Damp husky barley scents. I like the scent in a malt house way, but in a brew I’m not so sure. Heavy malty flavors, and again with a raw barley flavor. The flavors not one that it unattenuated or worty, just grainy. Some light sweet citrus creeps in in the middle. I do have to say it is what it says it is, an american pale ale, and that is all.

Poured from the bottle a dark yellow with an orange tint and a nice but little head that dissipated quickly. It has a slightly hoppy aroma with just a bit of citrus in there. It is a smooth beer with just a bit of a bite from the hops but not much else there. It isn’t bad just not a stand out.

Bottle: Poured a dark golden yellow color with not much head at all. The aroma was slightly hoppy and slightly citrus. The flavor was smooth and easy drinking with faint character of hops and citrus. Overall, an mass consumption beer with not much after taste.
