Commercial Description:
This robust dark brew has been created using rich Columbian dark roast coffee to celebrate our 10th anniversary in royal fashion. The enticing regal aromas of toffee and licorice lead to the coronation of taste; a palate of malty richness exhibiting chocolate and coffee notes, balanced by the noble and novel Mt. Rainer hop, all topped with a rich creamy crown. This very special offering will warm your soul and lift your spirits. Oh yeah, it also packs a royal kick at 8% alcohol.

Poured black with a small off white head. Strong aroma of coffee. Big coffee flavor followed by sweet malt. Almost too sweet.

Bottled. Poured a clear, ever-so-slightly hazy garnety brown with a short cap of beige head. The aroma picked up sweeter chocolates, roasty espresso, and licorice.. very deep, and well-presented. The flavor had a bunch of well-roasted coffee, chocolate, licorice, and vanilla at the sweet-ish core.. some scattered, rather raw alcohol notes appear toward the back, but don’t get too much in the way.. moderate herbal and coffee bitterness work well here. Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation.. almost syrupy upfront and more grainy on the back.. decent flow. Very good beer.

Pours rich and black, nice a dark like a 12oz bottle of espresso, although smells better. If it really were a 12oz bottle of espresso, it would probably have a much different effect on the body than would a 12 oz. bottle of beer. However, since it is made with espresso, then it is probably one of those happy mediums. This beer was quite good, nice flavor, lots o’ coffee and malts, sweet, yet not too sweet. Will purchase (and drink) again.

Bottle: Pitch black, but with an almost red tinge. No head. Quite still. The aroma is almost whiskey-like. As I sip, the first impression is of black licorice - no doubt. That impression lasts, although aspects of bitter chocolate do come along, too. Good, but not as good as the Haand Porter I drank right before this, which was a lower-rated beer. I don’t get it sometimes. (#3258, 12/20/2007)

A nice 12oz bottle from Beerbill, Thanks to bill for sending me this beer to enjoy it has a nice dark brown color. There was a thin tan head but that faded rather quickly. The aroma is very earthy and full of coffee, but the earth tones are much more domminant. As the beer warms up and you take your first sip it is very robust and bitter with a nice initial flavor os earth and hops. Then it is followed by some hints of coffee malt and a creamy finish. The palate has a strong earthnees that lasts for the entire duration of the beer. It just coats your mouth and the coffee is very minor but mainly when the beer is in you mouth, It is completly gone once you drink it.

12 oz bottle from Lou18 - thanks Lou! Pours a hazy, dark brown with a thin beige head. Sweet, rich, roasty chocolate and coffee nose. Sweet chocolate and mild sweet coffee flavors, mildly roasted, a hint of whiskey. Body is on the full side of medium, mildly creamy. Lightly dry, sweet coffee finish. Yummy!

(Bottle via trade with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=3 target=blank>Ty5592, thanks Ty!, cellared for 8 mos. after trade) Pours dark brown with some hightlights. One finger of biege head that recedes to a thin layer. Big sweet malty aroma of port, raisins, brown sugar and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel kind of light and loose but still with some texture, sort of dry like cocoa. Flavor is full of dark chocolate and coffee with notes of sweet dark malty things like raisins, brown sugar, molasses and port. Also has a nice nutty taste. Some alcohol burn but it’s a "smooth" burn. Reminded me alot of a doppel and I quite enjoyed it.

Bottle via JB175. Dark color. Smell of coco powder, malt, hops, caramel, coffee, toffee and alcohol. Taste of roasted coffee, caramel, hops, chocolate, pine, toffee and brown sugar. Wonderful coffee, caramel and chocolate aftertaste.
