Commercial Description:
This robust dark brew has been created using rich Columbian dark roast coffee to celebrate our 10th anniversary in royal fashion. The enticing regal aromas of toffee and licorice lead to the coronation of taste; a palate of malty richness exhibiting chocolate and coffee notes, balanced by the noble and novel Mt. Rainer hop, all topped with a rich creamy crown. This very special offering will warm your soul and lift your spirits. Oh yeah, it also packs a royal kick at 8% alcohol.

Murky dark brown (blackish) with a beige head that quickly recedes to nothing more than a ring around the glass. The nose is roasty and alcohol is noticeable; some caramel also comes through. Taste is nice and creamy with chocolate, roast, and some coffee coming through; not sure on the espresso part. Medium carbonation and full body; does really well with this one. One additional point to overall because taste is a little above an 8 and the palate is above a 4, but not a 5 for me.

Bottle. Poured a dark brown color with a medium light-brown head. Aroma consists of coffee, caramel, toffee, and chocolate. Mouthfeel is full and pleasant. Flavor is mostly dark chocolate with a coffee hint to it. Finish is vanilla and very sweet. An impressive porter. Thanks to Eaglefan538 for the bottle.

Pour is deep brown with small frothy head. Strong coffee aroma with some malt present. First sip was amazing with coffee and chocolate flavors, but as I drank further I thought I was drinking a liquid pretzel. Salt and yeast were all I could taste. Really dissapointed in FF for calling this one an Imperial also. Never again will I drink this.

12 0z bottle By far the best thing I have had from Flying Fish. Nice mix of coffee and chocolate malt. Nice full body but not over strong for the sake of being over powering. Not sure if the imperial label is correct but a good porter

12 oz. bottle pours hazy dark brown, not quite opaque, with a small, tight tan head, with some retention and some lacing. Aroma is malty and bready with lots of toffee and a little bit of coffee, and some serious sweetness - maybe lactose - and some floral hop. Well balanced malty flavor with a nice fresh hop tang and just a bit of expresso; not nearly as roasty or bitter as I expected from the name. Finishes slightly dry. Medium bodied, with moderately low carbonation; smooth and highly quaffable. Very solid offering here - a good porter with a near-perfect balance of coffee.

April 2007 - Beer pours dark with red highlights. Strong aroma of coffee. Nice mixture of coffee, chocolate... an dark fruits...unique. A little lacking in bitterness, but quite scrumptious for a sweet treat.

Pours dark and burgundy with a beautiful, milky foam of beige that recedes to a thin skin rather quickly. Caramel, toffee, and molasses, apples and candy sugar, some pineapple and booze in the aroma; espresso comes through in the sense of smoky, syrupy sweetness, but certainly is not forward even in the slightest; without the title it would go unnoticed. Bits of berry. Taste is very stern and very sweet, with lots of maple, fig, and honey being almost suffocating in tangy presence. Milk and chocolate, with lots of creamy, sugared coffee and brandy relax things a bit on the mid palate; sweetness takes a pleasant turn into some citrus zest and honeydew melon. Slightly thin and sugary in the mouth; medium bodied overall and softly carbonated. Finishes with a whimper of baker’s chocolate and table wine; some plastic and dry wood. The final impression is hard to gauge, because the sweetness is close to overpowering throughout, but it manages to keep a favorable balance throughout; like a high quality imperial brown in qualities more so than what it claims. Thanks Dean!
