Commercial Description:
Defying real focus (how unlike us!), we had to call Hoptical Illusion an Almost Pale Ale (5% Alc./Vol. / IBU 17.5 / Colour SRM 3.44). Hoptical Illusion approaches the characteristics of a pale ale, but takes a quick u-turn at the end. At 18 IBUs versus 25 and up for English Pale Ales, we’re hoppier than most commercial beers, but not too crazy. The star of the show is the dizzying aroma of the privately grown Amarillo hop. Beyond the provocative citrus and floral essences that resonate from the Amarillo’s small, tight cone is a subtle but unique maltiness blended from amber kiln and roasted specialty malts. Finishing with a final Amarillo reference, Hoptical Illusion is a beer that doesn’t beat you over the head, steal your wallet, and jack your car. But you still wouldn’t want meet it in a dark alley.

Clear copper with pathetic white head that disappears like a balding man’s hairline. Faint but pleasant hoppy aroma. Bit harsh carbonation but well blended clear, crisp hop taste. Clear aftertaste too.

A guest tap at Taps On Queen in Niagara Falls. Aroma is muted, but I pick up some caramel, biscuity malts, and citrus hops. The server had trouble pouring it, the tap was just spitting foam at first. It was copper coloured, with a small white head that had poor retention. Little lace. Tasted biscuity and carmelly. Little hops, not much bitterness. Some citrus. Medium bodied and lower than average carbonation (due to the foamy pour?). Overall, I have to say that I expected more hops with a name like "Hoptical Illusion".

On tap at Taps on Queens in Niagara Falls.Pours a clear caramel hued orange-brown with a medium sized white head. Big citrus hops with a light pine backbone and some malt holding it all up. Malty and sweet with a nice caramel note. Slow light grapefruit bitter finish.

355ml bottle. Pours a dark amber. Off white head that disappeared quickly. Lots of citrusy (grapefruit peel) hops on the nose. Slight dark malt flavour, with LOTS of fresh citrus hops. A bargain for what it costs. One of the best Ontario craft brews around.

I tried this beer on October 14, 2009 afgter purchasing a 6 pack from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a translucent red into the glass with a huge rocky off-white head that lasted a while. The aroma was weakly hoppy with a definite malt presence. The mouthfeel was weak-bodied, almost watery with a low level of carbonation. The flavour was mildly malty with a good hoppy finish. A hoppier flavour profile would have been nice.

Excellent beer. Great aroma, darkish colour, tasted quite hoppy though not as much so as a Tankhouse, maybe a little citrus and well rounded malts. Its the kind of nice hoppy beer you could drink more than oe of easily. Not just a sipper. I’m liking this brewery as I also like the Robert Simpson Confederation Amber.

355 mL Bottle. Deep amber body with an off-white foamy-bubbly head that settles to a long lasting film that laces the glass. Pine-like and floral aroma with notes of autumn leaves, grapefruit, sweet malt, crystal malt, and toffee. Sweet malt and crystal malt are there in the flavor and if an autumn breeze had any taste, this beer has it along with an innuendo of black pepper. Hops express in the aftertaste without being too overpowering. Grapefruit lingers a bit in the finish. This could be Canada’s very own "Oktoberfest" beer. Perfect for an Indian Summer barbecue.

Nice floral, citrucy and slightly piney aroma. Earthy hops and earthy malt in the flavor. Fruity hoppy finish with a light bitterness.
