bleeng (587), Spring near Beersel, Texas, USA Oct 23, 2009 Tasted at the Rare beer tasting at Wynkoop. Overwhelming whiskey flavor and nose-I could not finish the whiskey infused beer. BuckeyeBoy (1645), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 22, 2009 Tap at Denver Rare Beer Tasting aged in 23 Year Old Pappy Van Winkle Barrel. Pours out a ink black topped with a brown head. Aroma wow lots of bourbon. But has plenty of strong vanilla, sweet chocolate and dark roast to mellow out the bourbon bomb. Taste was much as the aroma lots of bourbon, vanilla, light oak, rich malts, and nice finish. I wish it was a little thicker.
HonkeyBra (1275), Lemont, Illinois, USA Oct 10, 2009 Sampled at GABF. Black pour with tan head, looks oily. Strong bourbon aroma. Some chocolate and oak. Flavor is strong bourbon and some roasted malt, a bit of oak and vanilla. I liked it. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Oct 6, 2009 On tap at GABF 2009. Another large pour while I was hanging with the Foothills group. Pours black with a nice medium-sized tan head with good retention. Aroma heavy on bourbon and a little perfumy and odd, but not bad, with roast, oak, and chocolate. Flavor also pretty bourbon heavy, yet tasty, with roasted malt, chocolate, oak barrel, and vanilla. Palate a little thin for a bourbon stout, yet still smooth, with low carbonation. TampaBrew (746), Tampa, Florida, USA Oct 3, 2009 Sample at Denver Rare Beer Tasting aged in 23 Year Old Pappy Van Winkle Barrel. Nose was big bourbon, big vanilla, soft oak, cocoa and roasted malts. Flavor was warming booze, big bourbon backbone, apparent wood, vanilla, some molasses, chocolate and heavy dark roast. I am convinced anything that goes into a Pappy Van Winkle Barrel is a winner! craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Sep 29, 2009 Draft sample at The Denver Rare Beer Tasting event during GABF week on 9/25/09. this was one of my favorite beers I had in Denver... Big black pour with an average tan head... huge bourbon nose with some vanilla... Medium body... extremely smooth... the barrel aging really takes force here with the chocolate malts falling back a bit... The bourbon is in your face from front to back... personally I enjoy strong barrel aging and this one delivered... cream like finish... so smooth... Awesome beer. pantanap (1323), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 24, 2009 Updated: Oct 3, 2009tap at brewgrass festival (had a few pours of this)...close to black stout pour, with brown edges and a light tan head.... big-on bourbon and woody nose as well as chocolate.... flavors were much of the same. very barrel-forward bourbon and vanilla flavors and less aggressive chocolate malt. soft to medium carbonation. not a huge balance balance here as the barrel took over the underlying base beer. i still drank quite a bit of this anyways. fredandboboflo (1395), East Setauket, New York, USA Jul 8, 2009 Tap at ACBF. Aroma charred and woody with cocoa, dark dried fruit. Flavor again woody but enough sweet chocolate and light fruit notes to balance it out. Pretty tasty.
