kiefdog (1534), Tampa, Florida, USA Nov 7, 2009 Sample at GABF 2009. Pours a menacing, murky black color with tan head. Aroma is sweet and roasty with notes of chocolate, toffee, caramel, ripe dark fruit, rum-soaked raisins, light coffee and roast. Flavor is about the same. Medium to full body with a pleasing chocolate, roast, malt finish. elihapa (1033), Honolulu, California, USA Oct 4, 2009 GABF Saturday. Another gem of a beer that I literally stumbled upon walking the stands of GABF on the last day. Appearance is dark dark brown but not black, cloudy but not opaque. Nose is deep milk chocolate with toasted malt, blackened wood and a certain breadiness. Mouthfeel is medium, a bit lean for an Imperial Stout. Flavors are indeed very well balanced, emphasizing chocolate. They are not all too powerful, but what is there is a tasty array of dark and milk chocolate. Overall, though this beer was very good, but perhaps not quite world-class. I’d drink this again though. swoopjones (1862), Buffalo, New York, USA Sep 28, 2009 #1750. GABF 2009, One of the few that I went back to multiple times. Deep black pour, khaki head. Huge roasty aroma, notes of soy, chocolate, coffee, big full mouthfeel. Taste if huge flavors of roasted malts, hints of dark fruit, chcolate & coffee. Great beer nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Sep 28, 2009 Had this several times on tap at the GABF and it was one of my favorites. Told the Foothills people I was from CA but had just visited their brewpub in NC and that got me several large pours. Had a couple pours of Sexual Chocolate to kick off each session and loved it every time. One of the best impy stouts at the fest, and that’s saying a lot. Will certainly seek this out again - hoping my friend in Winston-Salem can grab me one in 2010. Black and fairly viscous-looking with a large, foamy tan head. Very appealing and looks exactly like a beer in this style should. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, roast, smoke, and even a hint of tobacco. Smells great. Flavor is incredibly tasty and complex. Freshly brewed espresso, roasted malt, and lots of dark chocolate, along with dark berries, anise, and earth/tobacco. Some hop/coffee bitterness on the finish. Palate is medium-full and smooth, yet with a tiny bit of coffee astringency, which is not necessarily a bad thing in my opinion since it adds a little bite to it. andersand (271), Malmö, Sweden Sep 25, 2009 Pitch black with a small lightbrown head and no lazework. Aroma is cocoa powder, light hops, roasted acidic malt, some light brighter chocolate and plenty of dark chocolate. Flavour is first "right on cocoa" with light dark bitter chocolate, some acidic hard roasted malt and caramell. The beer finishes dry and roasted but quite weak, way too weak for a imperial stout in my opinion. Mouthfeel is a bit too thin for a IS aswell and the beer really suffers from this even though the initial flavour and even more the aroma is really nice. danielcurtis81 (879), San Diego, California, USA Sep 22, 2009 Served from a 22oz bottle of what I believe is the 2008 vintage, bottle 144/500. This was thanks to a trade with decaturstevo. The appearance is a deep dark chocolate brown with a fair amount of small bubbles and a medium pouring but dissipating deep barrel brown. The aromas are rich dark chocolate, espresso grinds, molasses, smoked meat, and hints of licorice. The flavors on the tongue just add to the enjoyment that the nose started. Rich dark chocolate, smoky, dark fruits like prunes and dried cherries, brown sugar. The mouth is creamy and smooth but still feels thin but not a lacking thin. Excellent beer! awiseman01 (318), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA Sep 22, 2009 #300 rating this beer. Bottle, graciously shared by danielcurtis81 on his wedding week. Pours deep black with thin dark tan head. Nose has alot of luscious red fruit on top of chocolate dessert and molasses. Taste is a smooth, pleasing elegant dessert concoction. Lots of sweet, toffee, chocolate, coffee malts and a perfect blend of dark red fruit. All flavors meld and compliment each other perfectly. What a real treat. I am simply aroused by this brew. thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Sep 20, 2009 This bottled brew from a DLD beer festival poured a medium sized head of foamy finely sized dark brown colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a opaque no visible carbonation dark brown colored body and a poor lacing. The aroma was roasted malt and dark chocolate. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start mediumly tingly at the finish. The mild flavor contained notes of malt and chocolate. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.
