Very drinkable, but not complex enough to be top of the range. Ibrew2or3 (2766), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA

OTH tasting 09/06/08 courtesy of CCB head brewer Wayne. Thanks buddy. Pours deep dark darkness near sludgy black with thin tan head. The aroma is roasty, chocolate, toasty and holds hints of hotness in the nose. The taste is fairly rich with dark chocolate along with thick chewy roasty malts. It has layers of sweet malts too. Very smooth blended and just plain yummy. I love the moderate chocolate notes and how they platy against the other malt character in this beer. Some may need this beer to be bolder in nature due to its bold name.

Dark as hell (almost black, even in a small taster glass). Thick, chewy, smooth and velvety on the tongue. Very rich-tasting, with bold elements of dark chocolate, coffee/espresso, sweet caramel and toffee. Big roast, too. Pinch of sour lactic. Nice bitterness to finish things off. Went back for a few of these. DrBayern (1137), Morehead City, North Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 19, 2008 Couple of samples at the WBF on 10/4/2008. Opaque black with a large, creamy brown head and thick, clingy lace. Big coffee and dark chocolate aromas up front, with a layer of some spiciness and maybe some dates or figs underneath. Blackstrap molasses type of sweetness quickly succumbs to a balanced bitter flavor that has contributions from roasted malts and spicy, piney hops. Smooth, creamy, heavy body with light carbonation does not disappoint, and the lengthy dryness provides a perfect finish. ratman197 (3240), Arvada, Colorado, USA

Aromas of esspresso, bitter chocolate and light vanilla. Palate was medium bodied and smootrh. Flavors of esspresso, dark chocolate and light vanilla with a smooth lingering chocolatey finish. polomagnifico (534), Saginaw, Michigan, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Oct 18, 2008 Bottle 103/500, aged 1/2 a year in my cellar. Very big thanks to emacgee for this great Impy!! Thanks Ethan!! Aroma has big notes of dark chocolate, roast coffee, some oak, some caramel and molasses malts, a little smoke, dark fruits, and a little sweet toffee in the background. Black in the glass with an average sized foamy tan head that mostly diminished and left good lace. Flavor is sweet and fruity in the start and fades to a nice bitter chocolate finish. Palate is very full bodied and oily flat. A very good example of how an Impy can be sweet and fruity but still roasty and smokey bitter. I really thought they balanced these flavors well and the half year in my cellar has done a fantastic job of blending and taking the edge off of this big beer. Wonderful and rare. | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Oct 17, 2008 Opaque, very appropriate black color. Like "Dark Lord Light," this ale is very heavily sweet with flavors of cherries, dark fruits and chocolate cake. Excellent flavor and aroma intensity, with a coating texture as well. Complex, with dessert-like malts. Very long finish on this bad boy. Undeniably one of the stand out beers at GABF 2008. GeneralGao (3057), Iowa City, Iowa, USA

Smelled predominantly of molasses and chocolate. Medium to full bodied and slightly sweet with mild bitterness. Nice mixture of dark chocolate, roasty malt, and dark fruits.
