The aroma on this is not really exceptional; a bit of cocoa, meh. The flavor, on the other hand, is superb. Like super rich dark chocolate.

Bottle. I am one to buy into hype to a point. Since I love imperial stouts I couldn’t wait to try this stuff and finally did at Pauls Hoboken Party. Aroma is chalky and full of cocoa. The flavor though, is just middle of the road for me reminding me of Old Rasputin. Smooth mouthfeel though. I hate to say a bit disappointing about a beer that’s not too bad but I wouldn’t go too far out of my way to drink this again.

3 beers in. Pours a dark thick liquid. The head is roasted in color and clings to the glass. The first smell is of strong dark malt and coffee; even though the label talks of chocolate, their was no cocoa aroma. The sweetness of the residual malt balances the bitterness perfectly. The lingering taste is sweet over bitter. Very delicious! Overall, I expected chocolate. Or sex. I got neither (from the beer.)

Bottle shared by MaxxDaddy, bottle 294, along with a small sample at Paul’s tasting the other day. Bottle is mildly roasty, mildly chocolate, certainly pleasing, but no oomph, no subtelty either, just some dull roast and boring chocolate. Not enough of either. The pour is pretty boring too, with none of the thick, dark head you’d expect from a monster IS. Flavor is lightly sweet, vegetal, muddy. This is not very special at all.

Sampled at the Savor DC event, this beer was my very first stop and I made sure to go back for several follow up samples throughout the night. Pours a deep, thick, opaque black with a thin, beige head. Aroma is subtle, but plenty of nuts, chocolate, brown sugar and a touch of coffee inviting you in. Flavor was wonderful. Dark cacao, coffee, licorice, brown sugar and caramel. Finish is thick but sweet with little indication of the high alcohol. Very well balanced and a real pleasure to drink.

Hum. Pours nice and black. Aromas are espresso, but also kind of sugarcube sweet. The test of this beer comes on the palate, where it is really aggressive. Tons of molasses and coffee, but a delicate finish that extends the coffee accents and invites another taste. There is some fruit lurking beneath the taste of this beer and finding it is well worthwhile. A thoughtful taste lends complexity to what otherwise would be a one dimensional companion to dessert.

Tap at moondogs (NoDa). average light brown and mostly lasting head into black body. good lacing was present. aromas of strong chocolate, coffee, and light hops. flavor is moderately sweet into light bitter. actually a bit more wateryness than I expected. the finish duration lasts forever and ever. soft on the palate velvety mouthfeel. F’n Amazing!

Bottle, shared generously by rciesla. Dark brown-black pour. Aroma is roasted malt, some oats, chocolate, and coffee. Flavor is the same, the coffee roast is a little stale. Good beer, but not my style.
