I had some 08’ on draft at The Flying Saucer in Charlotte. Impenetrable black with a fluffy brown head. Aromas are intense chocolate, some coffee, roasted malts, sugars, and some fruitiness coming through as well. Palate is so smooth and rich with a light carbonation and an amazing chocolate flavor. Other flavors consist of roasted malt, dark fruit, a touch of sweetness, some alcoholic notes, and slight hop bite as it goes down. This beer was an absolute pleasure all the way around. A must try. By the way my friend got the ’09 and we both preferred the ’08.

Finally!!! Bottle shared by a friend. A much better friend NOW!! Pours black, medium tan head, lacing. Aroma is nutty--almond or hazelnut, not sure--vanilla, cream, nice dose of roasted malts, alcohol in nose. Flavor is strong vanilla (this dissipates some over the course of a pint), coffee, chocolate, caramel. Very sweet. Smooth. Alcohol present in flavor, but not as much as the ABV would suggest.

Bottle thanks to drinkandrive. Dark black color with rich brown head. Bitter chocolate and coffee aroma. Tastes of chocolate, roasted coffee, caramel and dark fruits. Not too sweet with a semi dry finish. Excellent overall.

Bottle shared at Cletus’s Chinese New Year’s Party... thanks John! Poured a thick black with a fluffy dark brown head. Sweet aroma of dark chocolate with a touch of fruit, alcohol, and a little hop bitterness. Taste is quite dry with lots of bitter chocolate notes and some coffee with a hop kick to the finish. Alcohol is well-hidden. Given the chocolate labeling, I pegged this beer as being sweeter than it turned out to be. As we tried this one alongside Darkness, I couldn’t help but think that I would have liked to try a mix of the two, as both had qualities in a stout I enjoy but neither exactly stood out for me as spectacular.

Much thanks to Dmac for sharing this one. Pours out black with a big fluffy off white head. Big aromas of chocolate, roasted malts and maybe a touch of some dark fruits. Taste is complex with a very velvety mouthfeel. Flavors of chocolate, roasted malts some vanilla, coffee and dark fruits, very well balanced and very smooth. Thanks again Dave!

Receive bottle via trade (52/600) cap was leaking when I got it so I had to open it qucik :( Aroma is chocolate, coffee, and sticky molasses. Such a great aroma that fills the air when poured. Flavor is exceptional. Balanced, not too much chocolate. Roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, and some alcohol but in a complementary fashion not overpowering. Smooth, creamy and rich mouthfeel with light carbonation. Great for an impy. It’s sad that I’m going to lose this fine brew through the process of digestion.

Bottle shared at local BA tasting. Poured a black color with a large frothy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted coffee and chocolate aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy roasted bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer.
