Black chocolate pour with a huge thick creamy tan-brown head. It has an immediate coating of lacing when you move the glass. Smells of rich malt and bitter sweet dark chocolate. Not at all similar to that chocolate donut beer generic smell at all. Flavor is rich and is full of that great dark bitter chocolate. I can actually taste and savor the chocolate and it isn’t generic or chemical tasting at all. Flavor is full of real cocoa. Best presence of chocolate in a beer yet, and it isn’t overdone at all. Nice thick palate and ideal weight and smoothness. Mouthfeel gets thicker as you drink it. Very creamy and drinkable. This is the least alcohol I’ve tasted in an Imperial Stout in a long time. The alcohol is so well balanced and masked. Overall, I can’t wait to have another! Best Valentine’s Day beer ever!

Sampled at WBF in Durham NC, poured from tap like a deep dark chocolate milk, forming a thick and dense foamy head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, dark roasted malts. Flavour was like that of a smoothie, clean, yet quality chocolate, malts with a bit of long roasted coffee. Hop presence give a bitterness in the end. Impressive beer.

Draft. Dark brown pour with a good sized head. Strong roasted malt aroma with coffee and bitter and leafy hop notes. Taste is roasted malts, coffee, hops, powdered cocoa, figs, raisin, nuts and citrus. Very hoppy and full bodied.

Draft at Brewgrass 2008. Oh my jesus christ monkey balls, this was my favorite beer that I sampled at Brewgrass. Pours a black beer with a big tan head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee roast and molasses. Very creamy and bitter beer with an alcohol bite. I really enjoyed sipping this one, one of my favorite IMPY Stouts.

Bottle, aged about 7 months. Dark pour with generous deep tan head. Surprisingly not as sweet as I remembered from the various samples I’ve had at festivals. Smells of roasted malts and bitter chocolate with some coffee notes. Big roasty malts (molasses, soy sauce, burnt sugar) and hop presence up front, but the bitter chocolate comes through nicely at the end, making the finish quite smooth. A touch thinner on the palate than I expected. I generally do not like chocolate stouts, and I thought this might be overrated due to its rarity. I still think it is, but not by much. A very good beer.

Courtesy of Foothills’ own Wayne Wambles. Pours a deep black with brownish head. Aroma of chocolate. Taste, lots of chocolate, thick mouthfeel, roasted malts, light chocolate bitterness. Up there with the best of chocoloate beers.
