Iron and molasses in the flavor. Tastes just like a dopplebock should, very natural, with a rich melding of earthy flavors and slight sweetness. Slight bandage flavor. Had no idea of the strength, which is an indication of quality. Thanks Jon. willblake (2184), Belcamp, Maryland, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 10, 2008 20080410 12oz bottle Hazed, orange-tinted amber with medium sized beige head fading to a lasting film. Aroma is thoroughly smoky but sanely so, not overpowering the sweet, ripe malts and mild fruitiness of the yeast and malt combo. There is an earthiness that pervades the nose and flavor, hints of radish or water chestnut, some wood. Light phenols, occasional bottles show some vinyl notes, but that is the exception. Figgy sweetness pairs with dark sourdough. Mild lingering smoke at the end. Beautiful stuff. AmEricanbrew (1925), Wynot, Wyoming, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Mar 20, 2008 Clear copper color with no head. Huge smoked meat spicy beef jerky smell, wow. Rich, full bodied mouthfeel. Taste mirrors aroma with huge smoked malt/grain flavors and a hint of bock sweetness. The 10.2% is well hidden. Leave it to a small high plains brewer to craft the best smoked beer i’ve had in over two decades. Excellent. mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 16, 2008 Bottle. Pours a copper-red body with a medium sized bready tan head. The aroma is quite hammy with some rye toast notes. Flavour is smokey with some toasty sweet malts and a warm dose of alcohol. Pretty tasty. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 19, 2008 Apr. 2007 - Beer pours brown with amber highlights, smallish head but some good lacing. Strong aroma of candied sugar and lots of smoke. The flavor is really sweet from candied sugar, some sweet caramel malts and a lot of smoke. Reminds me of some good barbecue potato chips. Only complaint is a tad overly sweet, some more earthy tones or hops would have helped. Kinz (2211), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 11, 2008 Thanks to huleoo for bringing this one to the BJCP training session. Dark amber, slight head. Aroma was smoky with caramel on the finish. Flavor matched, initial smokiness lasted throughout, but dark malts and some toast came through nicely on the finish. Good marriage of smoke and beer. Could have been a bit fuller in the mouth for a doppelbock. Alcohol extremely well hidden.
