Thanks to huleoo for bringing this one to the BJCP training session. Dark amber, slight head. Aroma was smoky with caramel on the finish. Flavor matched, initial smokiness lasted throughout, but dark malts and some toast came through nicely on the finish. Good marriage of smoke and beer. Could have been a bit fuller in the mouth for a doppelbock. Alcohol extremely well hidden.

12 oz bottle from BlackForestCO. Thanks Jake! Aroma of sweeter malt with lighter smoked and earth notes. Pours thick and cloudy amber with a thin but creamy off-white head leaving nice spotty lacing. The smoke is much more pronounced on the tongue than the nose. There’s a nice balance of sweet caramel malt and salted/smoked bacon . This is a nice smoked that develops in the glass quite nicely. Sweet, but far from cloying. Smoky, but not intense. Balanced quite well.

Thanks to Dickinsonbeer! Very dark ruby, thin off-white head. Nose is malt & sulfur notes, smoked/iodine is present too. Flavor is caramel, iodine, malt. Really more reminiscent of a smoked marzen than a doppelbock. Sweetness comes out as it warms. Fruit becomes apparent but still hidden behind that iodine/smoke.

12 ounce bottle from BeerandBlues2
Pours crystal clear dark garnet red with a lasting light khaki head.
What a kick ass rockin’ smokey aroma! The smokey flavor is there as well. It comes off as cigar or pipe tobacco. There’s some chewy Reisin candy character. Yum.
Medium/light body. High carbonation. A sweet malt finish, but the smoke dries it right out.
What a fine surprise. Thanks a ton for this one great treat, Brad.

12 oz. bottle via trade with TAR - Pours a clear deep mohogany color with a 3/4 finger thick off white head. Thin spotty lacing. Aroma is a pleasant smoked malt. Flavor is also smoked malt. Palate is a touch thin and has a bit of cloyness to it. Light to medium body. A good smoked beer that isn’t to overbearing. Thanks Jeff.

In short: A complex and hard to categorize beer. Very good
How: Bottle, probably about 1 year old. Given to me by either Dickinsonbeer or beastiefan2k… bad memory. Thanks to both of them anyway.
The look: Cloudy ruby body topped by a beige ring of foam.
In long: Nose of red liquorice, caramel and an appearance of spices. Quite aromatic in fact. Taste is very sweet, woody toasted malts, caramel, red liquorice, hints of dry tobacco, gingerbread man, grapes. Amazingly well hidden alcohol. Supposed to be smoky but my bottle wasn’t although it might be due to the 1 year of age. This rather original beer is called a Doppelbock but listed here as a Smoked. To me it tasted like neither style. It’s not out-there but it mixes various common flavours/elements in an original way. It is to beer what a hip-hop Gregorian opera with guitar solos is to music.

Bottle in trade with Beerandblues. Smoked malts waxes and wanes gently thr the nose and body. Touches of salt in nose and finish but not body. Ashy is right on withthe slightly alkaline finish. Very nice

12oz bottle. Very nice smoked malt, soy and chocolate nose. Flavor is massively smoky, dry, ashy and woody, with campfire wood and char quite heavy. Wonderfully rich and malty, with a light sweetness showing up amongst a huge dry, ashy texture. Very, very good stuff, perfectly balanced with a near-perfect smoked malt level.
