I have to admit, this is a style that I don’t have too much experience with. Poured a clear and see through medium to darker mahagony color with an averaged sized head. Aromas and tastes of caramel, bread, nuts and some dark fruits. Medium sweet. Enjoyable. Rastacouere (5565), Montréal, Quebec, Canada
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jun 26, 2006 Hazy copper, off-white 1cm cover. Bready nose offers gentle whiffs of smoke. Toasty malts and slight fruitiness reminiscent of peach and orange completes the aroma scope. Juicy palate suggests tangerine and gentle floral, fruity hops. The malt mostly displays graqiny and starchy flavours. Medium bodied, moderately high carbonation. Fair. CaptainCougar (5538), Rockville, Maryland, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Sep 19, 2005 Pours a clear mahogany brown with a wispy, lightly-lacing off-white head. Aroma of earthy caramel malt and some German lager yeast. Body starts rich and sweet with a nice balance of carbonation, a hint of tartness and some mild smoke. A fairly interesting and enjoyable brew that hides its alcohol quite well. MartinT (5075), Montreal, Quebec, Canada

-Frail head over the orangey red.
-Berry fruitiness eyes the inherent pils malt vegetal character which strangely recalls potato skins for me.
-Potent cranberry fruitiness isn’t helped by the lack of sweet maltiness.
-This is rather svelte-bodied for a bock of this gravity.
What if you dig deeper?
-The advertised smoked malts haven’t participated much.
-Alcohol is ably concealed, which is always fun in these big brews.
-The vegetal pils malt character takes a little too much room for my tastes.
-There is a fun bock in here somewhere, but it just doesn’t hit the spot for me.

Smells of dough, caramel, dark fruit, touches of sugar. Tastes malty and sweet with dates, some earthy hints, cherries and some medicinal hints. Mouthfeel is thick with a nice sweet finish. Some moderately alcohol bite is present but subdued. Another solid brew from this brewery. JPDIPSO (4944), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 26, 2005 Clear, near ruby colored liquid. Moderate light tan head. Much darker than I expected for a the moniker maibock. Malt monster aroma, with light fruit (peaches and raisins), hint of peat, mild herbs (rosemary, sage and thyme) all carried my honey roasted malts. Certainly an interesting smelling brew. Malted grain all over the place in this ones flavor. Malted milk with a dash on honey, light birch, dark chocolate. Late in the quaff the the rauch does come out and urges you to grab a smoked pork sausage. This one teeters on the edge of rauch, but it fits the bock style as well. I like this breweries embracing of smoked brew.
