FlyingSwine (115), Littleton, Colorado, USA Jun 14, 2008 12 oz bottle. This is a strange beer. I couldn’t decide if I loved it, or hated it. After drinking the full bottle, I decided it was neither. Pours a very nice dark copper/crimson, with a decent white head. Aroma is kind of putrid, but it isn’t terrible. Flavor reminds of smoked salmon and ham, and the malts are sweet with hints of brown sugar. Palate is medium, and slightly creamy. Not great, not terrible.
Dorwart (1603), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Aug 16, 2008 Thin head which dissipates quickly. Light carbonation. Salty terraiki aroma with some beef jerky, and spicy malts. Nice ruby brown in color. Light smoked flavor and aroma. Slight bitterness and sweetness. Mostly malts and roasted grains. Finishes spicy and with a light salty smokyness. I nice mellow smoked beer. Very easy drinking. I liked this one. MaltDawg (293), Richmond, Virginia, USA Aug 14, 2008 12 oz bottle courtesy of Butters (the Tequiza is herewith forgiven) Nice smoky clean malt aroma. Clear amber golden with small off-white head.
Light smoke and tea flavors with some graininess and noble hops. Quite smooth. Light body with medium mouthfeel. Clean crisp finish with touch of residual spicy hops. I am a little surprized with a lot of the other ratings I thought it every bit as good as the Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen Rauchbier. Oh well. Guess I will have to do a side by side comp :) ( Maybe it was because we had the Tequiza in front of it) nqualls (205), Tennessee, USA Aug 14, 2008 12 oz bottle from Frugal MacDoogal’s in Nashville. Poured a clear amber with one finger of whitish head. Aroma was smokey with some sugary notes. Medium body with average carbonation. Flavor was of caramel and sugar. Smoke flavor was very prevalent. unclemike (351), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA Aug 6, 2008 Mild smoke aroma wafts above a maple, caramel maltiness with some herbal hop notes. Brilliant, clear, copper body is topped by two fingers of lasting off white head that recedes to a generous cover with some nice lacing. Initial sweet malt flavour is joined quickly by an assertive but not overpowering smoky character. Pleasant bitterness finishes things off and smokiness lasts in the aftertaste. Medium-light body with fairly lively carbonation. probstk (674), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Aug 5, 2008 12 fl. oz. bottle via Lubiere, served cool in a tulip glass.
App.: Clear reddish amber with remnants of an off-white head.
Aroma: Caramel and some light meaty smoke, some canned corn, light fruitiness, brown sugar and light molasses, slightly metallic.
Palate: Medium+ body, very soft carbonation.
Flav.: Some caramel, brown sugar and light molasses, slightly more smoke than the nose, vaguely fruity; slightly off-dry with a touch of bitterness and a little brunt sugar and metal to finish.
Not a huge fan of smoked beers, but this is drinkable.
