willblake (1942), Long Branch, New Jersey, USA Jun 21, 2008 20080621 12oz bottle Deep ruby tinged amber color with small but creamy beige head. Aroma is briny and full of woodsy smoke with touches of candle wax. Taste is much more mild that aroma as far as the smokiness, but there’s a nice crisp simple lager underneath. It’s mildly briny throughout with hints of canned black olive touched with smoked paprika. It has a medium to light mouthfeel and the eff is not overwhelming but maybe a bit more prickly than is useful for carrying smooth smoke flavors across the palate. Vanishes on the finish to a perhaps unfulfilling climax that leaves me in need of a thirst quencher. Despite it’s relative mediocrity, I find myself picking this one up regularly in the months since it has reached NJ shelves.
Breworthy (14), USA Oct 12, 2008 Aroma is faint, but pleasant.
Appearance is great, crystal clear.
Flavor is average. Nothing really stands out, but the malty undertones are nice.
Palate is nice, crisp and clean.
Overall a decent amber colored lager. Could beef up the flavor and aroma, but is a decent, drinkable lager. Rciesla (897), Brick City, New Jersey, USA Oct 12, 2008 Bottle. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Lager malt, some lightly smokiness, more like burn malt and a bit nutty. A bit spicy like bbq with distinguished sweetness. piscator34 (942), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Oct 12, 2008 Bottled sample. Light amber in colour with strong carbonation. Aromas of smoke, caramel toffee, and a touch of fruit. There’s a solid amount of smoked malt flavor, but there’s a sweetness that tempers my enthusiasm for this beer. There’s some subtle earthy-spicy hopping that provides some balance and interest as well. A good effort, but less caramel sweetness would improve this beer quite a bit. JoeMcPhee (3815), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Sep 28, 2008 Deep amber beer with a thin white head. Aroma is softly smokey. Rich and sweet with a nice malty backbone of toasty malts. Sweet and malty with a great sweet smokiness. Soft lingering herbal hops. Really, this is nicely balanced, tasty rauchbier. A bit of spicy hoppiness on the back. kyzr (962), Belgrade, Montana, USA Sep 20, 2008 Pours a clear amber with off-white head. Roasted malt nose Ever so slight smoke flavor to it, has more roasted sweet malt than smoke. If it didn’t say smoked, I would have not really noticed it. Nice spice on the finiish.
