| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 19, 2004 This bottled brew poured a medium sized head of frothy fine to large sized long lasting light brown colored bubbles that left behind a fair lacing. The body contained soft carbonation, was opaque and black in color. Its aroma contained notes of coffee molasses roasted sweet malts and was very nice. Its mouth feel is initially tingly with a hoppy coffee bite and dark beer brown malts. The finish is a lingering tingly thick palate and a malty smooth hoppy aftertaste. Its flavor contained coffee roasted malty hoppy and dark beer brown malty notes. It was very tasty. An excellent beer that I would buy again. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 5, 2004 Dark brown/black and clear... fizzy and fading off-white head. Interesting roasty coffee, raisins, chocolate, and hop aroma. Can’t get enough of that. I seem to like it slightly better than the flavor. Damn, shouldn’t have looked at the other ratings. I definitely catch a sort of green olive bitterness in there, which accompanies more roasted malt and a tart fruit hint. Uh... marijuana smoke finish. Pretty good... all around good beer. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 28, 2004 Dark cherry fruit nose combined with herbs, citrus, burnt grains and milk. Flavor of burnt grains, herbs, Werther’s original candy-type caramel (hints of butter), and green olives at the end of the finish. Hop bitterness balances like an IPA. There is a slight sourness in the finish as well from the dark malts. MaxPower (961), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 10, 2004 Dark brown in color, nice lasting creamy tan head that leaves a sticky lacing in my glass, roasty chocolate-coffee aromas. Roasted burnt chocolate coffee flavors, nice bitter-sweet flavors, good roasted bitterness in the finish. Medium body with a nice, soft and creamy mouthfeel, another good one from Founders.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 7, 2004 Usual high carbonation on this as on the other Founders I’ve had lately, so it’s time to play the waiting game, I guess...
enormous creamy tan head...dark brown body, with crimson shades shining through the sides...nice, toasty, sweet aroma, slightly cola-ish, though, little bit o’ spice...Taste: big hops at the fore, huge carbonation, rich and full, bits of cocoa, and nuttiness, as well.
it’s a brown ale, not a "black ale" as the label calls it, and it’s a nice one. Very active mouthfeel, very spritzy, lively, tasty.
Body is fullish, texture is bold and flavorful, finish is medium and I like it pretty well. Better than many a brown ale out there.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 31, 2004 Pours a dark brown colro with a nice, but small, head that rims the glass. Aroma is coffee and roasted like a stout almost. Flavor is bitter, like roasted coffee beans. Body is smooth and savory. Good beer. OldGrowth (1433), North Carolina, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 16, 2004 Bottle:Good nose, smoke, nutty, milk/cream. chocolate. Nice brownish black color. Little to no head, but it could of been the way I poured it. Bitter sweet flavors, Roasted grains, coffee, chocolate, smoke all come to mind. Thinner bodied, though litely creamy. Roast flavors hang on the finish. Damn this is familiar, very good. Founders continues to impress.
