Aroma of dark roasted malts and a hint of coffe. Sweet burnt malt flavor to open giving way to a nice bitter finish. Medium body and lightly carbonated. krisbierjaeger (844), dolores, Colorado, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 26, 2003 'rare' and 'mysterious" and 'a unique creation' says the label. oh bull cookies. an ale version of a schwarzbier? sounds (and tastes) like porter to me. this creamy topped brew pours the color of burnt chocolate chip cookies-- the head is raw dough colored and sheets beautifully. nose is stove pipe sooty and broom straw, burnt currant even. dry with a soft passage over the tongue-- soft that is, until the resident bitters settle into the taste buds with the lingering tang of grapefruit oil. some unsweetened chocolat noir, and towards the end, some thin spots reveal a bit too much water. super dry bitterness seldom floats my boat, even WITH all that water. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 26, 2003 Yep it's black with a small but solid creamy head and very good lace. The aroma hints of burnt malts, smoke, coffee, light mocha, light grapefruit, earthy yeast esters. The taste is bittersweet with a chalky dry smoky finish. Just like a true black bier should be. Additional fruit and mocha undertones. A top notch version of the sub-style, damn nice and completely quaffable. I.C.suds (186), Da U.P. eh?, Michigan, USA

This beer is the Michigan version of Yorkshire's Old Peculier. Excellent and at a fair price. loweredsixth (942), Fresno, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 25, 2003 Dark black/brown color, cloudy, with a small beige head (quickly dissipating.) The aroma and flavor were of bitter roasted coffee, and bittersweet chocolate...much like a session stout. In fact, this thing behaves much like a stout...not really a porter. Medium body...much carbonation. JCW (1262), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 3, 2003 I probably would have never called this an ale, it reminds me of Dark Horse's Black Bier, more of stout/porter. Very dark color, almost black, opaque, with a moderate brown head. Sweet fig or prune like aroma, with hints of roast coffee. Flavor is slightly bitter, very roasty and coffeeish. Finish is somewhat bitter and sweet. Very good beer, I'm not sure about the name though.
